05/24/2013 - Peony field jottings...
Ok, we give up! After talking with other growers accross the midwest who have years of growing experience and my 35+ years of peonies, again, I GIVE UP! For those of you who have followed our blog over the years, every once and awhile i may say, 'this is the weirdest spring, summer, fall and winter, etc that I have ever experienced'. Well, this spring tops them all. Continued drought last fall, late spring and now rain, rain, rain (7" since last w/e and more forecasted), our peonies are wondering what is going on above the ground? For those of you in very wet spring conditions and our thoughts and prayers go out to those of you in extreme flooding areas, pull back any of the mulch to expose about 1 to 2 feet of bare ground around the center of your plants. If your plants are or have been under water this is not a good situation so the more you can get the site dried out the better. As you know 'wet feet/roots' are peonies demise. After wading through some parts of our east field this morning, I noticed rows of earlies that are still not up and lates that are up. I also noticed different growth rates of the same variety in their rows. Some setting buds, showing stem growth and other not showing anything. Again, this is a first for me and many other growers and gardeners at least here in the midwest. Once and/or IF the soil dries out enough to walk the rows without loosing a boot or two, will post again. Another weird aspect is the fact that plants in the shaded areas with partial sun are doing better than those in full sun. This is attributed to last years drought and high temps that scorched many varieties early and put them into dormancy way ahead of time. Couple that with the late spring and cooler temps, we're hoping no PRAYING, that some of these plants will come back. Can you say a unperfect storm? And the weirdness continues with other perennials as well. Our bleeding hearts are not showing yet and yet the hostas are going crazy! Should be the other way around. So my gardening friends...WHAT UP? Lets hang in there as we wait out the spring and PRAY that normalcy returns...maybe?!
05/24/2013 - Peony Field Days
Thanks for all the calls and emails regarding our peony field days. Hard to believe that last year at this time we were post early and mid peak blooms. For 2013, we are anticipating mid to late June but the way the recent weather has been going, who knows. More posts will be coming as we try to get a handle on the bloom times. Thanks!
05/13/2013 - Peony field jottings...
And the great news is...the early and mid peonies are finally waking up! Some of the very early varieties are now setting foliage and 12 to 18 inches ABOVE ground. Late varieties are still asleep but with 90 degrees forecasted tomorrow, perhaps they may begin to show. No mention of 'Peony Field Days' in Keith's vocabulary yet so stay tuned. With this strange spring, again, he said to give them a couple more weeks before establishing the dates. For those of you in higher zones, enjoy the color and make sure to wait a couple of weeks AFTER the last bloom is spent before tidying up your plants by cutting below the spent blooms. For those of you who are growing 'Rivida', we actually leave the spent blooms on the plants and use them for fall floral arrangements. Rivida has a unique reddish color that may show itself depending on the growing conditions. Because of last summers drought, the reddish color did not show as the plants went dormant way to soon last year. Just some interesting side notes for fall floral arrangements. Happy gardening...FINALLY for us and hopefully for you!
05/12/2013 - Happy Mother's Day!
To all mom's, may this be your special day and thanks for being great mom's! Enjoy!
04/28/2013 - Peony field jottings...
Forgive me for being way too excited but, the tulips are coming! You know what that means...yes remove mulch, which we did yesterday and the peonies may soon show themselves here. I can't begin to look at the upcoming forecast so will enjoy today's 82 degrees and sunshine. Wonderful to be outside in shorts and tee shirts. Enjoy!
04/26/2013 - A hint of green!
Our first tulips literally came up 2" by the end of yesterday. With warm weather forecasted this weekend we and you in our zone vicinity HAVE to remove 1/2 of our mulch. So have fun and patience is a virtue...right!?
04/23/2013 - Bare ground again!
So weather forecasters were off 4 to 8 inches as we HAD 2 inches last night and as of this afternoon, most snow has already melted. Come on sun warm up the soil! Once soil reaches 50 degrees, may the peonies please come out! With 60 degree temps forecasted, we might even see a few tulips showing next week! Enjoy!
04/22/2013 - Winter is not done yet...
Perhaps we shouldn't have been to anxious for spring as yes, 6 to 10 inches of snow by morning. With blizzard conditions outside now and the thunder snow, gives a new meaning to April showers? Thunder and lightning during a snow storm just isn't right, right? Rumor has it 60 degrees by this weekend and we truly hope it is this weekend! Hang in there our snowy gardeners and those of you with color in your gardens, ENJOY!
04/20/2013 - Zone 4a and 4b mulch removal
I'm going out on a limb and suggesting that after this latest snow melts, remove 1/2 of your mulch even though your tulips may not be 6 to 8 inches above the ground. Then a week later remove the rest of your mulch. With this very late spring and lots of moisture as of late, we are removing ours as noted above. We need to get the site warmed up and dried out so the new plants will start to wake up. Make sure when you remove all the mulch that you pull it about 18 inches away from the crown and expose the bare ground. Don't worry as any new...don't say but have too...snow, will not harm any shoots that may appear. We have another makings of a very late bloom this year; however, May may change all that if we go straight to summer and forget about a normal spring warm up.
04/20/2013 - Peony field jottings?
Thus the conclusion of winter? A foot of new snow with many 3 to 4 foot drifts in our west field beseiged us by 2 PM on Friday. Today lots of sun...and snow melt. Perhaps this is it? For our gardening friends in northern Minnesota, stay strong and yes spring will come? This snow is a miracle in providing much need ground moisture so for that we are blessed but very anxious. Absolutely no time in the fields, no peony soldiers and yes crocus appearing so tulips are maybe not that far behind. This is the end of winter, 2013 and that's final...I think?
04/15/2013 - 2013 Website update
We are almost there with the final touch ups and 2013 bloom time chart should be up shortly. Hope you like the new design and appreciate any positive and improvement comments for next year. For those of you who have been inquirying about the 'Photo Coming Soon' pictures, sorry but they will be posted after bloom time as the one's from last year are not up to our standards. Also, we split our inventory into online and onsite ordering. This way we can afford the same amount of plants for our online customers and those who come out to our peony field days. Which by the way is still white in the fields with more snow predicted this week. For our dear friends in Dallas, TX that sent us some pics of their intersectionals, THANK YOU! So far in that zone the intersectionals are now 3-years old and doing fine so you in the Dallas area, might want to give the intersectionals a try! Back to our inventories, once we sell out of some varieties online and IF any are left from the field days, we will update any sold outs with that inventory. Gets confusing but if you want a specific variety, you may want to order it online just to be sure. The pricing will be the same for online or onsite. Happy sort've spring here!
04/11/2013 - Let it snow let it snow let is snow?
So 8 inches and counting. I heard of dreaming for a white Christmas but not in April. Appears total from storm may approach 11 to 15 inches by tonight. Now the great part! Can you say wonderful moisture? We will take this vs rain anyday of the week as snow will soak in slower than rain. Needless to say all fieldwork is still on hold. No above ground growth was noted before the snow. Happy winter...again!
04/08/2013 - Zone 2 to 4 Peony field jottings...
We are intently watching for tulips to reach 6 to 8 inches in height so we can begin to remove 1/2 of the winters mulch. No tulips have shown themselves here yet. For those of you in Zone 4b, you may be seeing tulips so if as above remove 1/2 of the mulch and the rest of the mulch in 7-10 days. With snow forecasted...again here, we may not see the tulips for awhile. We've found that when the ground temp reaches about a 50 degree constant day and night, yippy! The peonies are coming. So far though, the ground is still frozen on the surface in the morning after freezing temps overnight. If you have already removed your mulch, do not worry as it appears that most of the frost is out of the ground at least around here. With the marvelous rain over the weekend, much needed moisture is soaking in. Happy waiting!
04/02/2013 - Swenson Gardens 2013 Website
As we mentioned yesterday, please be patient as we update and tweak the last minute items on our website. This was a major upgrade from our previous websites to try and make this more user friendly for our MAC and mobile gardeners. Most of the Windows gardeners should still be right at home on our site with all the animation items. Also you will see numbers of varieties with 'photo coming soon'. Our photographer, Keith, informed me that all his photos from last spring's brief blooming time were not up to his standards. Thus he decided to wait until this years bloom to update the pictures. I think he just wanted another excuse to play with his new camera.:) Spring is finally in the air here (other than 15 degrees this morning and now 1 foot of snow covering the peonies) as the robins arrived last week and the starlings are already setting up their homes in the purple martin houses. We wait patiently for the martins as we had 2 pairs raise their young ones with us last year. Another new arrival last week was 'AP' of course short for Adrian Peterson with the Vikings who arrived last week as well as our 24th member of the beef herd. He is a long legged Dexter as they can be both long and short legged. Maybe not as fast as the real AP, but appears to be able to cut and head up the field quickly. Happy spring to all!
04/01/2013 - Swenson Gardens is now OPEN!
Just a few more tweaks on the website to go but ordering is now available through our secure online store OR mail-order through our 'How to order' page. Hope you like the new look and easier navigation. Enjoy and happy gardening!
03/24/2013 - 2013 Website Update
All info is now in the hands of our very capable webmaster for input into our new design and feature rich website. IF all goes well with the upgrade and updates...first or second week of April. Stay tuned and will keep you up to date. Thanks for your patience! BTW the snow has not melted...YET! Happy almost spring!
03/20/2013 - Happy Spring...somewhere, anywhere?
Hard to believe a year ago it was 79 degrees and peonies were a foot high on some of the early varieties. Now gazing out the window...still 2' of snow with 4 to 5' drifts in some areas. The cornstalk mulch over the new plants is nowhere to be seen. So we wait patiently for 'Spring'...someday! Congrats to you who have spring and rumor has it that the peonies are even showing.
03/02/2013 - Happy 2013!
Trust your winters are winding up and now it is time to awake from a very long winters nap and start thinking about SPRING! We wish you and yours a wonderful 2013 with health, family and happiness for each new day! Speaking of days...yes we are all well and looking forward to spring. Our fall and winter have been very busy as Keith has been caretaking his parents up in northern Wisconsin since last August. 1 to 2 (4 hour one way trips) a week and thankfully he said yesterday that he see's a flashlight at the end of a very long tunnel. His mom is in a nursing home now and soon to be arranging assisted living for his dad. His mom's health has stabilized after an episode in early September that put her in ICU and not supposed to make it through the night. Must be the Finnish Sisu and help from our Almighty Creator that afforded her with many more months of time here on this earth. Please lift Keith and his parents up in prayer as the past few months have been very hard on him. He's looking forward to spring very much so he can try out his new remembrance gift (camera) from his dad. The new and improved 2013 website is now out of our designers special touch and awaiting input from the webmaster. It will be updated with new features for all you iPad and iPhone users. Because our website has been built around 'Flash', some MAC devices have not been able to achieve the full benefit of our site as all the Windows users have. Mobile access will also be upgraded and a few other surprises along the way. All the peonies are still snug in their beds as snow cover has been amazing at least for us. Maybe 18 to 24 inches are still left in the fields. As we get closer to launching our new site, will update our blog more frequently. For now the webmaster says to be patient as he has not given us any timeline for opening in 2013. Happy winters...end?!
10/07/2012 - Youtube video
Almost forgot, go to youtube and search 'Swenson Gardens' and let us know what you think about our first video with more to follow next year. Enjoy!
10/07/2012 - THANK YOU!
All of us at Swenson Gardens would like to thank you for a wonderful 2012 peony season. Through various marketing efforts, presentations and word of mouth, we thank you and the good Lord for a very successful season. With a 30% increase in retail sales, we must be doing something right in this economy. Yes it is time consuming to grow peonies the natural way without chemicals, but in the end, it truly is worth it! Thanks also to our staff and for sure Danny, who has taken over alot of the responsibilites as Keith continues to recover from arm surgeries. We'd also like to thank our other Dan and Kari for their continued help during the 'windows' of chaos! We will continue to post on our blog at various times during the next few months with updates to the 2013 season, but for now we are signing off for some much needed rest and maybe even some fun! With the MN State Fair over, Britta and Luke are basking in their Purple ribbons. Britta and her horse Daisy continue to amaze all of us as she and Keith went to another show yesterday and came back with (2) 1st and (2) 2nd in western games. She and Becky will be traveling to Ohio a week from today as Britta competes at the American Quarter Horse Congress with her speech. Luke is finishing up with his honey bees and can't wait for his trapshooting league, guitar and drum lessons to begin. He's already researching buying his first car so mom and dad are quite nervous just in case his driving skills are similar to his dads. Becky has her hands full with home educating Britta and Luke, working with her AWANA girls at church and happy to get back to walking (and not up and down in the peony rows). And finally me, yes Keith, two seasons of no muskie fishing, dividing peonies and being able to use my right arm lifting, is getting better and thankfully it has taught me to slow down and enjoy life for today. Being able to spend more time with Britta and Luke truly is the highlight of my last two years. Traveling to Superior to visit my parents has also been special knowing all of our time here on earth is short. Please pray for my mom and dad as more events the past 2 months has placed my mom in the nursing home and dad for now is living at home alone. My heart goes out to others who have or are experiencing the same things with aging parents. Cherish all moments with friends and family as 'you never know'! Thanks for being part of our family over the years and we look forward to talking with you again soon! Happy gardening!
10/07/2012 - Cut down your peonies!
We've received numberous phone calls and emails regarding when you should cut down the peonies. Our answer is NOW if they are dormant and foliage is dry. DO NOT wait for the first hard frost as the draught conditions have put them into dormancy much earlier than normal. DO wait for the first hard frost if your peonies are still green and lush. Make sure to remove any cut foliage and burn or throw away. Do not compost peony foliage as they harbor lots of diseases as they decompose.
10/07/2012 - WATERING ALLERT!
For those of you in locations with absolutely NO RAIN since early September, we request that you slowly add 1 1/2 to 2 gallons of water slowly around the drip line of your peonies. This includes all established peonies as well as those of you who received new peonies during our first ship. If you have received an inch or two of rain, DO NOT water your peonies. Stay tuned for more info as the draught continues for us and others again this fall. Also, any shrubs or trees that you have, please let them get a drink of water as well. We want all our plants to have adequate moisture before the ground freezes.
10/07/2012 - The Peonies are Coming!
Ok Zones 6 to 8a, the boxes were packed and brought to the Post Office on Friday, October 5th. You should receive next week and by all means try to get them planted as soon as possible. We regret (actually Click n Ship through the USPS will really regret) that our normal online shipping and notification through Click n Ship will NOT be received this time. After numerous online attempts with no online support, we had to manually fillout each Priority Mail label and info at our local Post Office. In fact the Postmaster came in on her day off as it took three employees and Becky to complete the process in 4 hours. Look for your boxes this week and do contact us on October 15th IF you have not received your order. We did sign up for delivery notification so we at least will have record of all these shipments. For those of you who ordered online, you will be receiving an auto reply from our website noting that your order has shipped. Have fun planting and now we have to wait...again!
09/21/2012 - Last day to order 2012 peonies
Today is the last day to order online and mail order for 2012. Website will still be available to view but our online store is closing at the end of business on 9/21/2012. We appreciate your confidence in ordering with us and look forward to the 2013 season. More information will be forthcoming on the launch date for the 2013 season. Thanks again and happy gardening!

For those of you who bought their honey last year, wait till you taste this years. Their 8 hives of Italian honey bees have sure been busy!

09/07/2012 - Swenson's Organic Peony Starter Mix
For those of you coming out to pick up your orders on the 8th and 15th of September, we finally have our starter mix ready for sale. As you will find out in the years to come, this starter mix includes all organic materials as well as a special ingredient. The mix is available at $3.00 per bag which will be enough for one peony forever. Over the years we have tried different blends and now feel confident due to the excellent results of this blend to offer this for sale. Sorry but for this year it is only available for pick up orders only. Next year we hope to add this to our online and mail order business. Please see Luke and Danny when you come out. Thanks.
09/07/2012 - Growing Zones 2 to 6
IF your peonies are already brown and crispy from this crazy growing season, ok to cut your foliage off 1 to 2 inches above ground level. We and prehaps like you saw our plants go into dormancy almost a month ago. First time ever that we didn't need a hard frost to force them into dormancy. Again, please remove all cut off foliage from your site location as decomposing peonies harbor many diseases that will affect your plants next year.
09/07/2012 - Growing Zones 7 & 8a
Friendly reminder to STOP watering your plants NOW to encourage dormancy for the remainder of fall and winter. Many of you are in drought conditions so if your plants are already brown and crispy, cut foliage off about 1 to 2 inches above the ground. Do not let the foliage remain in your site location as decomposing peonies do harbor nasty diseases that can affect your next year's plants.
09/07/2012 - First Peony ships on their way!
The picking and packing crew are done and 99% of the first dig peonies were delivered to the post office today. For those of you with correct email addresses, you will receive notice and tracking information via the USPS Priority Mail system. Once your root(s) arrive, please open your box and place in a cool, dark place for up to one week IF you cannot get them in the ground immediately. Planting instructions will be included in your order or look on our website in the 'Peony Care' section for info as well. For those of you with information requested by us and yet to respond, if we don't hear back from you by 9/14/12, sorry, but your order will be cancelled. Happy planting!
09/04/2012 - Peony field updates...
Well the digging crew survived the 85 to 90 degree heat over the past week and wouldn't you know it cooler temps forecasted for...tomorrow! All first order roots have now been dug and the dividing team finished around 5 PM today. Now the picking and packing crew takes over to make sure they are packaged correctly for pick up on 9/8 or 9/15 and shipping. Our plans are to ship out later this week or early next week so hang in there so your fun may begin soon!
08/28/2012 - September 21, 2012
This is the last day to order peonies that will be shipped for the 2012 season. Ordering for pick up and early season shipping is now completed. For those of you in the first shipment who have not ordered yet, you still have time to get into the second shipment that usually goes out in early to mid October.
08/28/2012 - PEONY BARN SALE

08/28/2012 - Please pray for Keith's mom and dad!
Keith just returned late last night from round 2 of his mom's recent event. Following a minor surgery last Monday and brief stay overnight, he left a week ago today at 2 PM. After countless calls to his dad, he finally got a hold of him on Wednesday morning as he lost his phone number. The paramedics arrived at 4:35 PM on Tuesday to find his mom unresponsive. Upon further investigating it was then learned that she was in ICU and had made it through the night. Insulin shock, congestive heart failure, fluid in her lungs and pneunomia. YIKES! so Keith sent back up late in week to find his mom as perky as before her minor surgery. This was her 5th time at deaths door but the good Lord must have other plans for her for those of you who remember the last events in 2009. Today she was transferred to a rehab facility but both Keith and his sister cannot have her return to the same living situation so please pray for them as they decide what is best for this season of their parents lives. Thanks!
08/28/2012 - Swenson family MN State Fair update...
So Britta received a purple ribbon for her horse demonstration and Luke 2 purples and blue for his sushi projects and snowmobile safety demonstration. Now preparations are being made for MN State Horse Show and WSCA Champ Show in mid-September. Congrats kids! For you other 4H'er families, great job this year as this truly is a wonderful opportunity for kids and teens!
08/28/2012 - Let the digging begin!
With the 5 inches of rain over the weekend, roots are beyond plump and eyes. Keith says he has never seen roots like this before. We were concerned with the high temps and early dormancy, but again amazed at the timing for moisture and then 5 inches before digging our first ships...we are truly thankful! Of course the digging crew is slowing down with the 90+ degree temps over the next three days but thankgoodness we have a cooler to store them and the digging crew in when they've had enough! Happy digging!
08/11/2012 - Swenson family updates...
We thought when our kids got older that their activity schedules lessened...WRONG! The just finished the Wright County fair last weekend. Our daughter Britta finally got it together with her western gaming horse, Daisy. (Yes we have 3 Daisy's...her horse, her cat and a Dexter cow.) Please no more Daisys'! She qualified for the MN State horseshow in 4 games. In fact she received 'high point' winner at the fair and now on to state 9/14 to 9/14 in St Paul. Wright County has the largest 4H horse program in MN so it is very competitive. She also qualfied for the MN State WSCA Champ Show in same 4 games (jump figure 8, key, poles and barrels) on 9/22 & 9/23. Her goal...nationals! She also received grand champion in demonstrations. Our son continues to excel in 4H as well. He received 2 grands and 2 reserves at the Wright county fair so he is going to state as well. Dad is very proud of him as his grands were in food and nutrition highlighting...SUSHI dad's favorite food! Becky is officially done with her 'Freedom Ranger' broiler chickens. She and Danny had fun with this newer breed of free range broilers. Now all she has left are the 'girls' her brown egg layers. They are hoping to spend some time up in Ely next week playing while Keith and Danny stay back and parent all the animals. Great news on Keith's arm as he's back to about 40% usage after his set back in the spring fishing when he wasn't suppose to fish for another year. Of course he had to try even though doc said NO. Trust you all are enjoying your summer!
08/11/2012 - Peony field jottings...
My, my where has this summer gone? Thankfully the heat has subsided somewhat and the rains have actually been quite nice in our area. Our thoughts and prayers go out to many areas that experience extreme heat and drought conditions. For those of you with 'brown' and dried up peonies. Might we suggest to cut them off now as they are in dormancy and had enough. Okay to give them 1 to 2 gallons of water 1x every 10-days until Labor Day ONLY if normal rainfall has NOT occured. Because of the early springs across the growing zones, the peonies were able to absorb needed energy at the start of the peony season. The weed crew is praying that last week was the last weeding time in the fields. Most of the late season weeds are done almost 3 weeks ahead of normal. Our plants look great as thankfully, we had rains at just the right time. More rain expected tomorrow which makes the peony roots that much more plump when we start up the digging season for first ships later this month. Speaking of orders, WOW! Many of you are first time customers so welcome to the family! We strive to provide the best organic roots grown the way they should be grown! Lots of love, labor intensive and NO STINKING CHEMICALS! Grandma and Grandpa's never used chemicals so why should we! Happy gardening!
07/03/2012 - Those of you in flooded and high rainfall zones...
Now to the other extreme...too much rain and flooded peonies. If your peonies are still located in water logged site locations, there is not much that you can do other than try to channel some of the water away from the plants, remove any mulch material about 1 to 2 feet away from the center of the peony and wait patiently for the site location to dry. You may see the peonies wilt from too much moisture and if site dries in time, they may come back. IF the foliage and stems turn dry and brown, remove and discard. Our thoughts and prayers go out to you as a lot of you are trying to recover from the destruction of the flooding in the Northeast and Upper Midwest. Take care!
07/03/2012 - Zone 7 and 8a
Some of the same techniques posted previously can also apply to your peonies. However, if your peonies are still green and haven't exhibited dormancy (foliage/stems turning brown already) okay to continue 1 to 2 gallons of water slowly poured around the drip line until the end of August. DO NOT WATER PAST LABOR DAY AS YOU WANT TO ENCOURAGE DORMANCY! IF your peonies are already brown, only water 1x every 2 weeks as long as the site location is dry 6 inches under ground level and you haven't received any rainfall. Again though, stop all watering by Labor Day. Cut off and remove any brown/dry stems at anytime. Don't wait until the fall to do this. Happy gardening!
07/03/2012 - Extreme heat advisory!
For those of you who are in these zones, here are some tips that you may want to consider. This would include zones 3 to 6. We'll address 7 and 8 in the next post. Again note that peonies are much smarter than us mere gardeners and growers. IF your plants are starting to turn brown due to the high temps and marginal lack of rainfall, do not worry. Once the entire stem(s) turn brown, okay to cut off. The peony is trying to tell us that they've had enough (just like us northerners who saw 98 degrees yesterday and forecasted 100 today). Also, okay to slowly our about 1 to 2 gallons of water around the drip line of the peony 1x this week on your 1 and 2 year old plants. 3 year and older plants are already extablished and can withstand the high temps a lot better than younger peonies. IF your site location is already wet and has not dried out, DO NOT WATER YOUR PEONY UNTIL THE GROUND HAS HAD A CHANCE TO DRY OUT ABOUT 6 INCHES BELOW THE SURFACE! To tell, gently stick your finger in the ground at the drip line and if it comes out without any soil on your finger, okay to water. NOW going forward, depending on weather conditions, okay to keep up the 1 to 2 gallons of water 1x per week for the next 4 to 6 weeks as long as the site location is dry below the surface and if you haven't received any rainfall. For us we had storms last night...again...so the plants in the fields are doing just fine. IF your 1 or 2 year old plants are already brown (dormant) ONLY WATER THEM 1X EVERY 2 WEEKS FOR THE NEXT 4 TO 6 WEEKS AS LONG AS THE SITE LOCATION IS DRY AND YOU HAVEN'T RECEIVED ANY RAINFALL. Order soon as after they are gone, we are out for this year. Candy Stripe is one of our top three sellers as it is such a stunning plant in the garden. Happy shopping!
06/25/2012 - Peony field jottings...
So we spent last week up on Burntside Lake in Ely, MN. Sorry but we just had to take a vacation. The highlight of the trip was seeing some of our customers peonies in full bloom. Bartzella and Hillary were in their glory so was fun to see some color after the end of our bloom here. Ely is about 6 hours north of us and offers some Zone 2b growing areas. Intersectionals are amazing as we also heard from some of our customers in Dallas, TX who have had very good success with intersectionals down there as long as they are planted in majority, shaded spots. The official last bloom in our fields was over today, yes Ruth Cobb is the winner again. We hope to offer that one next year. That means our first bloom of the year was in early May and we are almost to the end of June with the last of color. That is why we stress to gardeners to vary your bloom times so you can experience color for many weeks with different varieties. Thankfully we were not at home on June 17th as another storm came through that left three separate 1 foot gullies across our driveway. For those of you in the Duluth, MN area and others who had flooding a week ago, our thoughts and prayers go out to you as you rebuild and recover from the devistating rain storms.
06/11/2012 - Peony field jottings...
Thank you to all of you who were able to come out to our Peony Field Days. Over 1500 of you were able to view some of the peonies in various bloom phases. Next year we plan to open up more of our field for viewing so if the weather window remains good, who knows what you may see in the fields as we continue to organically nurture these amazing plants. Speaking of amazing plants, the storms again last night, no damage to plants were noticed this morning. Some of the lates are still going including Rose Pearl and yes the Bartzella's and Garden Treasure's are still blooming even with the 90+ degree temps over the past 3 days. For those of you who have been inquiring about cutting off spent blooms, here is rule of green thumb based on your USDA Growing Zones: wait at least 2 to 3 weeks after the LAST bloom is spent before you snip of about 2 inches below the bloom. This will tidy up the appearance of your shrub like plants. Now for you floral arrangers, the remaining seed pods add an interesting element to fall arrangements. Just keep them on your plants as is and watch for 'the look' when the foliage starts to turn brown in the late summer/early fall. Varieties like Rivida, Neon, Ava Nida, Hit Parade, Gay Paree and other Japanese blooms will see the seed pods turn to a dark red or burgundy which is stunning in fall vase arrangements. More news weekly from the field as we enter into peonies next season...shrub like plants. For those of you in Zones 2 and colder 3's, now it is your time to enjoy color. Have fun up there and take some time to smell the peonies! Happy gardening.
06/01/2012 - Our last Peony Field Day is 6/2
For those of you who enjoyed a perfect day in the peony field, today was the day. Thanks again for coming out to visit. My what a change from last weekend. Field is dry and mid to late bloom times are hanging on very nicely. Intersectionals are doing great as well. Appears that the weather tomorrow will be almost as perfect. We are open from 9 am to 5 PM and peony cut flowers will also be available. Remember that we are 22 miles west of Delano if you are coming from the cities. Our address again is 10958 70th St SW, Howard Lake, MN 55349. Give us a call at 763.350.2051 if you need more directions. Travel safe and will see you tomorrow.
05/31/2012 - June 1st and 2nd Peony Field Days from 9 am to 5 PM
Our address is 10958 70th St SW, Howard Lake, MN 55349. Ok so we did peak at the weather forecast and for now, looks great! IF weather changes will post and note a message at 763.350.2051. Britta WILL have peony cut flowers available for purchase both days. We wish we had more color in the fields for you, but it will have to do after losing many buds to the freeze. Also, some of you have asked if you can bring dogs and the answer is 'yes' as long as you keep them under control and on the outside area of the peony field. Travel safe and see you at the Peony Field Days. Please note, we are located about 22 miles west of Delano and not affiliated with the other peony grower on the east side of Delano.
05/30/2012 - PEONY FIELD DAYS UPDATE
Our last and final days of our field days for 2012 will be held on Friday, June 1 and Saturday, June 2 from 9 am to 5 PM. We're almost afraid to look at the weather forecast based on last weekends eventful weather. With the cool temps...again, the bloom has slowed down after the 88 degree temp on Sunday. New arrivals include Bartzella, Callie's Memory, Canary Brilliants, Garden Treasure, Joanna Marlene, New Millennium, Candy Stripe, The Fawn, White Ivory and others. The mid's and late's buds also got hit hard from the freezing temps in April. We just can't believe how different the field looks this year without all the blooms. For sure we lost at least 50% of the buds. Thankfully the ground is drying out again so will let you know field conditions for Friday. See you soon!
05/28/2012 - Peony field days reflection...
Thank you for all who came out today. Sorry if we could not talk with all of you as it was very busy mid-day. This concludes our Memorial Day Weekend Peony Field Days and will post later this week regarding our June 1st and 2nd field days. For those of you who got stuck in the mud, be assured that we were not filming you for YouTube. Now for those of you who watched later in the day when the wind switched to the NW while we frantically tried to remove the canopy, please, please do not post it on YouTube. We thought the tent was going to travel up to Duluth. Hope you all had a wonderful time. Hope to see you on this Friday and Saturday from 9 am to 5 PM. Depending on weather and temps, we should see more of the mid to late and possible late's by then. Who knows anymore after the past three days. Again, Happy Memorial Day and thanks to all the veteran's who were out today. We truly appreciate you and all you do for our country.
05/28/2012 - Peony Field Day
This was posted at 7:15 am on Memorial Day. WOW, what a storm. We have not been in the field yet but from our window we still see a lot of color in the field. Thankfully the wind damage to trees and buildings was minimal. No hail, just 3+ inches of rain. Our portable cow shed is on its roof and thankfully...again, all the animals are safe. We WILL be open today from 9 am to 5 PM. Most of our rows have cover crops, but it will be muddy so bring boots. This storm is a good test for the plant varieties that are truly 'No Staking'. Have a safe drive out here.
05/27/2012 - 5/28/12 PEONY FIELD DAY UPDATE
This update was posted at 4:50 PM on 5/27/12. Heavy rain and storms are forecasted for tonight and early morning. Stay tuned to additional blog posts or call 763.350.2051 for any updates. Make sure to wear boots as the field is starting to get muddy. Unless we post differently, we plan to open at 9 am and go to 5 PM. Our address is 10958 70th St SW, Howard Lake, MN 55349. Please travel safely and will see you tomorrow.
05/27/2012 - PEONY FIELD DAY ON MEMORIAL DAY
First of all we want to say thank you to all the men and women who have and are serving in the armed forces. We appreciate you and thank you for serving our country. As a small token of our appreciation, we will offer you who have served and are serving in the millitary a 25% discount for peonies that you purchase at our Memorial Day Field Days on May 28, 2012 from 9 am to 5 PM. Thanks again and look forward to meeting you tomorrow.
05/27/2012 - Peony field jottings...
With the 85 degree temps this afternoon and yes some big yellowish, orange ball in the sky, the blooms are popping fast. What a change already from yesterday. We are now at 50% blooming so tomorrow and later next week should be the peak unless the forecasted 1 to 2 inches of rain and storms tonight take another toll on the plants. The cutting crew is busy in the fields while the weeding crew is inside watching videos in air conditioning. Feels nice...inside! Yes we will have cuts available for the Field Days tomorrow. The yellow intersectionals are starting to show and yes Gordon is still going strong. New Mellennium, Garden Treasure, Pastel Splendor, Court Jester, Bartzella and some new ones for next year are just starting. For those of you who have inquired about Fiber Optic, yes we will have it available next year. Danny and I got some great shots of Fiber Optic this afternoon and can't wait to share those with you next year.
05/27/2012 - 5/26 Peony Field Days
Thanks again for those of you who braved the wind, rain and colder temps yesterday. We appreciated you stopping out and still enjoying the peonies in bloom. Welcome to our new gardening friends who stopped by as well. Happy gardening!
05/26/2012 - PEONY FIELD DAY WILL OPEN AT 12:30 TODAY
The storm has passed and we will be setting things up shortly. No hail or high winds, just more rain. Field is very muddy, so if you are coming out today, rubber boots and a warm jacket are a must. Most of the blooms are closed up and waiting for some sun. This was posted at 11:20 am on Saturday, May 26th. We will be open until 6 PM today to give those of you who are traveling more time to get here. Our next field days are 5/28, 6/1 and 6/2 from 9 am to 5 PM. If you can't make it today, will see you another day. Drive safely!
05/26/2012 - PEONY FIELD DAY POSTPONED UNTIL AFTER THE STORM
This was posted at 8:00 am on 5/26/12. Storm is arriving here earlier than forecasted an hour ago. We will reopen after the storm has cleared. Will post time later. You may also call us at 763.350.2051 for recorded message. Thank you!
05/26/2012 - PEONY FIELD UPDATE AT 7:10 AM
We are attempting to open at 9 am today as long as the storm system does not arrive early. If you are watching radar, appears like it will reach Howard Lake around 10 am and be over around 1 PM. We will stay open until the storm arrives, then close until storm is over and then reopen. This is the only post until the storm is over. Appears that it may include hail so will talk with you later. Hold on peonies...this too shall pass!
05/25/2012 - PEONY FIELD DAYS UPDATE
For those of you who came out today, thanks again for stopping by. It was fun to talk with you and find out that we are not alone with the passion for peonies. As the day progressed, so did some of the new blooming arrivals including Copper Kettle, Hillary, Julia Rose, Prairie Charm and Goldilocks. Seems like the intersectionals are dragging their roots in showing some color other than Gordon and Morning Lilac. Thankfully the field was not as bad with the cover crop between the rows. Tomorrows field days, which is Saturday 5/26 may be a little more interesting due to the forecasted thunderstorms before 1 PM. If driving a distance, you may want to call our recorded message at 763.350.2051 for updated weather info. If thunderstorms, we will postpone until the storm is over so tomorrow afternoon actually looks okay before the next round of storms. Make sure if coming from MPLS/St Paul that our field days are in Howard Lake and not in Delano at the other peony growers location. I know last year some of you did not drive far enough west on hwy 12 as we are about 20 miles west of Delano. Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow depending on storms. Make sure to bring rubber boots and insect spray. We hope and pray that it could have been sunscreen but may have to wait another day, week, month? Drive careful!
05/24/2012 - Peony field jottings...
Forget Skipper...we almost feel like Noah! Published rain total forecasters were a little off. Can you say 8 inches? We have never seen a rainfall this intense since 2002. The sun finally came out this evening, at least that's what Danny said it was, but the muddy field prevented some last minute work in the field before the field days tomorrow. Thankfully we did not have any hail or the high winds like we did before field days last year. With the heavy rains though, the newly openned blooms really took a beating. I guess we are up to normal rainfall for the year...literally overnight. Happy gardening!
05/24/2012 - PEONY FIELD DAYS
For Friday, May 25th,we are still on for the hardy gardeners. Rubber boots are a must as we are extremely wet. Might we also suggest mosquito spray as the recent rains exploded a new crop of the other Minnesota state bird. We wish we could tell you that the field is blooming at its prime, but it is about 20 to 25% color as of this evening. Colors that are in bloom include dark red, red, eggplant, corals, purple (yes Gordon is blooming), rose, white, pinks and a few yellows. Intersectional blooms are very limited with buds due to the freezing temps. Alot of the plants that set their buds early did not make it though three nights of freezing temps. Now we are modifying some of the areas to view in the morning unless it dries overnight. Looks like tomorrow may be the only rain-free days on our opening field days weekend. Britta did cut a bunch of peonies for purchase, but we are even limited with those this year. Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow between 9 am and 5 PM. Please call 763.350.2051 for a recorded message on any changes. Thanks.
05/23/2012 - Peony field jottings...
Skipper! For those of you in our area listening to the weather forecast, 1 to 3 inches of rain by tomorrow afternoon? Could make for another interesting storm...again. Will post again tomorrow once we get through the storms. So far only rain but things will get interesting after dark. Dan and the crew had fun dodging storms today and finally gave up this evening. This may make for interesting field conditions for the Peony Field Days. Stay tuned...
05/21/2012 - PEONY FIELD DAYS!
The dates again are May 25, 26 & 28 and June 1 & 2 from 9 am to 5 PM. Stay tuned to our blog and phone recorded message at 763.350.2051 for any weather related cancellations. For those of you coming from the east, go west of Howard Lake on hwy 12 to County Road 5. Go south/left 1 mile to 70th Street SW. Go east/left 1 mile to fire number 10958 70th St SW. We are on the north side of 70th St SW and look for parking signs. If coming from the west, go east of Cokato to County Road 5. Go south/right 1 mile to 70th Street SW. Go east/left 1 mile to fire number 10958. Restroom is available and based on cut flower supply, we may or may not have available for purchase. The cutting crew is starting tomorrow so we will know more as the week progresses. As usual, may we suggest Sunni's Grill in Howard Lake for lunch and do stop in at Cattail Corner on the east side of Howard Lake for those last minute hard to find annuals and perennials. Happy and safe travels!
05/21/2012 - Peony field jottings...
Not to complain, but the drought last summer/fall,70 degree temps in March and three freezing nights in early April really did a number on the bud production and survival rate after the freezing temps. Like we said earlier, at least 50% less blooms this year as the plants recover. This will not slow down the root growth, but the sea of color in our fields is significantly less. Today's arrival included Joker, Erma, Carnation Bouquet, Abalone Pearl, Coral n' Gold, Red Grace, Christmas Velvet (WOW!)and more Gordon's. For those of you looking for a stunning intersectional, Keith has officially named Gordon he favorite of the day/week. Will see what he says tomorrow. We hope and PRAY that the storms they are predicting later this week will not damage the plants like the 3 hail storms and high winds like last year. Happy gardening!
05/21/2012 - PRINTABLE ORDER FORM IS NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE!
We are slowly but surely updating our website for 2012. I spoke with our webmaster tonight and he will be updating some of the other surprises soon. With our Peony Field Days quickly upon us this year, we would suggest you get your mail-in orders in as we do sell out of many varieties after our field days. We will make every effort to fulfill all orders as best we can. We do not substitute varieties so once they are gone, its all over for this year. You can get to our printable order form on the 'How to order' page and then click on the red colored, 'printable order form'. You will also note a 5% discount for personal or cashiers check. Happy shopping!
05/20/2012 - Intersectional and Itoh Hybrid Peonies
Friends, from time to time you will notice other sources and even EBAY websites that are selling potted Intersectional Hybrid and/or Itoh Hybrid peonies. For those of you new to Swenson Gardens, let me just say buyers beware! What I mean by that is most of these are tissue culture plants that may or may not be true to name and may take 5 to 7 years to reach maturity. Unfortunately the tissue culture craze has flooded the market for us growers around the US who truly have a passion for growing originators and field stock. This is especially true for us as we made the choice to grow our plants organically without the use of any chemicals. Some of the growers who have chosen to use chemicals may try to compete with the tissue culture plants but for us we cannot. This chemical free route is tough choice for any grower as chemicals are any easy way out for profit but whats left in the air, soil and plants makes my grandmother roll over in her grave. If you believe in the way we are growing our plants for you to enjoy in your gardens, we welcome you into our family. For us though, enough is enough! We are taking a stand against chemicals and growing unbelieveable peonies that will truly last for generations. So yes you may pay more for some of our plants, but at least we can truly say, the amount of labor and time that goes into nurturing these plants for you, is actually a labor of love. Will you join us this year? We hope you do. Thank you!
05/20/2012 - Peony field jottings...
Here we go again! For those of you who have been following our blog from last year, you may recall the three hail storms, 63 mph wind and excessive rainfall within 2 weeks of our first field days weekend. Well we can now say we have only had 1 storm the week of fields for now. Yes it was a nasty storm last night. After a day in the fields of 85+ degree temps the weeding crew was done 6 hours into the day. Way too hot this early for us northern people up in the north country. So with the high temps and humidity came the storm. Marble size hail, 60 mph winds and 2 inches of rain. Needless to say some of the 1 and 2 year old plants took a beating. Not as bad as last years storms but still it is sad to see what happens in the fields. So yesterday we had 85 degrees, today was 61 degree high and in the mid 40's over night? YIKES! Thankfully the cooler temps will slow down the blooms for this weekend. Keith was all excited tonight as Gordon's first primary bloom showed. Needless to say he was glued to his camera for a few hours tonight. Very fun to see the immergence of color in the fields. So far the blooms of the mature plants are holding up well even though there are about 50% less buds than last spring. My what a drought will do for bloom production the next year. New varieties that are now showing are Rivida, Ava Nida, Red Charm, Buckeye Belle, Chocolate Soldier, Athena, Morning Lilac and of course Gordon. No corals are showing yet but our guess is prime early to mid blooms this coming weekend. With the 85+ degree temps for 2 days, this can through the peonies into warp speed for blooming so we will keep you informed as the week progresses as to the prime colors in the field. Very weird bloom as the plants on the north side of the hill are blooming before same type of plants on the south side of the hill. Sometimes we give up trying to understand these plants as they do things out of the norm. Hope all your gardens are doing well and do enjoy them when you have a chance. Happy gardening!
05/15/2012 - New additions to our farm.
Has been a busy week on the farming side. Keith, Dan and Luke started cutting our first crop hay tonight. The new/used IH 856 and NH 1411 discbine were amazing. Since a week ago Saturday, we've had 6 more beef cows arrive, 4 hogs (Keith will tell you more about that later), 150 'Freedom Ranger' chickens, Luke and Danny's honey bees came back from Texas and oh yes, a new calf named 'MD' who was born on yes, Mothers Day. Busy but a fun time of year. Enjoy your spring!
05/15/2012 - Peony field jottings...
For those of you last year who experienced the drought and lack of snow cover this winter, we are seeing the result of that in some of our very early blooms. Perhaps you too are noticing that the blooms are not as big and not as many. Again our peonies and your peonies are much smarter than us as they do this to maintain root vigor and storage for events like this. Don't worry as we always, hopefully, have next year. I know for us the late frost in April after many days of 60's and 70's also did a number on some of our first blooms. New arrivals in the fields include Lotus Bloom, May Lilac, Nova and Sprite. Things are looking good for the earlies and mids to be in display over our field days. Will keep you updated as the days progress. Happy gardening!
05/12/2012 - Peony field jottings...
About 6 of our very early varieties are just starting to bloom. Mid May showed up right on schedule and Rose Nobel showed today. On the north side of our home and in formal garden, the tree peonies popped today and still can't understand why Bess Bockstoce is showing color in an area with less sun than in the fields. Must be our male dog Redd that warmed up the soil faster:) Happy gardening!
05/12/2012 - PEONY FIELD DAYS!
The official dates have been set May 25, 26 & 28 from 9 am to 5 PM AND June 1 & 2 from 9 am to 5 PM. Please note that only our Howard Lake field will be open to the public. We are located about 2 miles SW of Howard Lake. The address for maps and navigation is 10958 70th St SW, Howard Lake, MN 55349. More info to follow and looking forward to seeing you again!
05/12/2012 - Happy Mother's Day
For all the mom's past and present, thank you!
05/06/2012 - Peony field jottings...
The rains came down and the floods did not come up! Another 2 1/2 inches fell last night bringing out 7 day total to just about 5 inches. This is getting very close to being back to average rainfall for 2012. For that we are very thankful and happy that moisture levels are returning to normal after 2+ years of drought. Added our fern and some species peonies to the start of bloom today. Buds are very plump with all the moisture so blooms should be looking good. Now to have steady temps in the 60's and 70's for a normal bloom time versus the 85 to 90 degrees we had last year in late May and early June. Those temps are way to hot for the buds and they literally explode into color withing hours. The cutting crew is getting their cutters sharpened up just in case. Speaking of cut flowers, do call Becky and 763.350.2051 and reserve your cut flowers for any special occassion. She will work out the costs and availability as the season progresses. Happy spring and gardening!
05/06/2012 - Sad news...
Our friend and webmaster's dad passed away. Again please keep him and his family in your thoughts and prayers as he lost his mom and dad in the last 3 weeks. Our sympathy and heartfelt prayers go out to him. Thank you.
05/05/2012 - PEONY FIELD DAYS!
Yes it is that time again...although way ahead of normal. More info will follow but for now mark your calendars for May, 25, 26 and 28 from 9 am to 5 PM here in our Howard Lake field. Addtional dates will be added as we get closer to the bloom so stay tuned for more dates and info on the peak bloom time. Yes this is Memorial Day weekend so if you don't have plans...NOW YOU DO! Like last year, we try to schedule various times as it gives you different color based on their bloom time. Happy gardening!
05/05/2012 - Website update.
Knowing that anyone who works with us at Swenson Gardens are considered family, please keep our webmaster in your thoughts and prayers. We were finally able to catch up with him after his mother's funeral and then found out his father is not doing well. We ask for your continued patience in waiting for all the finishing touches on our website and by all means call us at 763.350.2051 for questions and ordering information if you are not comfortable in ordering through our online store. The link for printable order forms has not been uploaded yet. At this point we are not sure when he will be able to finish the website but we are still busy behind the scenes in nurturing these amazing plants. More updates to follow as we want to allow him as much time as possible during this very hard time. Thanks again!
05/05/2012 - Peony field jottings...
Another wonderful rainfall over the past few hours. Plants are growing like weeds. Speaking of weeds...they are doing well too.:) Congratulations to our first bloom of the season, Little Red Gem. Yes she started blooming knowing that she has full sun and on the southern edge of our Howard Lake field. This is at least 2 to 3 weeks ahead of normal. With some warmer weather and sunnier days, will update on the runners up. Fun to see some color again!
04/21/2012 - The buds are here, the buds are here!
Between rain drops today, took a stroll through the fields and noticed that the very earlies are setting buds. Again, this is another first for us only being mid April. The lates are still 6 to 10 inches high and intersectionals are in the 12 inch height range. No word yet on field days predictions so stay tuned. Please continue to forgive us for the lateness of updates to our website. The printable order form and other updates should be back from our web designer this week and then our webmaster should get things uploaded soon there after. Thanks again and happy spring!
04/17/2012 - Congratulations Ramsey County Garden Club!
Happy 100th birthday! What an honor to be part of your celebration last night. May you continue with much success in beautifying your wonderful city of St Paul!
04/15/2012 - Let it rain or snow or hail or what?
The fields are looking great and very thankful for the growth of the plants knowing the drought and lack of rain last fall. Some of the early Saunders are 15 to 20 inches high with some foliage starting to fan out. All the lates are just starting to show and intersectionals are not to far behind. Every year we are amazed how one day the IS's are not showing and then in a few days, a foot high. We're not complaining about the rain we've received the last few days, however having to run to the basement twice this evening because of our first hail storm and funnel cloud that went over our home around 5:50 PM is a fine start to the storm season. Hail was pea to nickel size that did not do any damage. What we don't understand is the weather forecast for later tonight with a chance of a trace to inch of snow? Actually we would love snow as it might slow the peonies down knowing that our average last frost for us is May 15th. Happy shoveling or is it gardening. Funny story this afternoon before the storms and finding out that we may have snow on the ground this morning, Becky ran outside and planted her peas (not the hail kind). Maybe you have heard this too, which I didn't before, that if you plant your peas before some snow, your peas will taste sweeter? Will see...
04/15/2012 - 2012 Website
Friends we are still waiting for the final updates to load. Something about new software updates are not done yet in order to host our one of many videos we will be hosting on our site. Including later this summer, step by step videos on how to plant bare-root garden and intersectional peonies. Every year we are asked for visual aids versus just written instructions so for your visual learners...it is coming! The printable order form link is also part of this upgrade so sorry for the continued wait this year. Thanks for your patience...almost like growing peonies!
04/09/2012 - 2012 Online ordering is now available!
Our webmaster has informed us that the online store is now open for business. The link to print out our mail order form is in process. Thank you for your patience!
04/08/2012 - 2012 Website...
We are uploading as this is being typed. Please be patient over the next few days as we put the finishing touches on our site. Thank you!
04/08/2012 - Happy Easter!
May you and yours have a wonderful Easter!
04/05/2012 - Frost on peonies!
We've been getting calls and emails regarding what to do with newly sprouted peonies when frost/freezing is forecasted. Peonies that are just showing and foliage has reached normal size DO NOT need to be covered as long as the overnight temps do not go below 19 degrees (F). If the overnight temps go below 19 degrees, it still takes three consecutive nights of those temps to disfigure (not kill) peonies. IF that were ever to happen, rest assured that your peonies will still survive but will not flower. For those of you who have buds fully established and color is showing on the outer guard petals, then I would cover and protect from frost/freezing. The reason for doing this is to protect the buds and future blooms from dieing. Sometimes we see that happening with a late frost and buds turn brown and do not flower that year. Again rest assured that even IF this happens to the buds, your peonies will be fine for next year! Peonies are much smarter than us mere humans, so let them do there thing so we can sit back and do our thing by enjoying these amazing plants. Happy gardening!
04/02/2012 - USDA Zones 2 to 4
Final reminder to please remove and discard your winter mulch. We've received reports in zones 4a of early varieties 6 to 10 inches tall. Here in our fields, the earlies are 2 to 4 inches tall. This is by far the earliest I have seen in my 30+ years of growing peonies. Hang on for another strange but fun year!
04/02/2012 - Wrong web address for Prairie Yard and Garden
Sorry, http://video.pioneer.org/program/prairie-yard-garden/ and then click on 'Peonies'. Thank you!
04/02/2012 - 2012 Website in final stages of releasing!
Hang in there gardening friends! Our webdesigner and webmaster are hard at work getting things set to launch. Please note that our website may experience some slowdowns and outages as the changes are being upgraded. With our upgraded software changes, we have more fun things to show you! Thanks!
03/19/2012 - Let it rain!
YES! The rain came down tonight and afforded the peonies with a much needed drink! For those of you in the 'snow less' regions, this is exactly what we needed. Sounds like we, at least, have a chance of more rain all week. Thankfully the crew finished removing the mulch on all the first year plants. Happy Spring!
03/19/2012 - Catalogs
Please note for those of you who are new to Swenson Gardens, we do not offer a printed version of our peonies. All our business is web enabled. Once our 2012 site is updated, you may order through our online store or go to 'How to order' page for mail in ordering. Thank you!
03/18/2012 - Prairie Yard and Garden Show
They filmed last spring and the episode aired on 2/16/12. Since we cannot get that programing here, we were able to watch it online. You can view it at http://video.pionerr.org/program/prairie-yard-garden/ and then click on the peonies episode. Enjoy!
03/18/2012 - 2012 Website Update
We are in motion for 2012 updates as all the pictures have been cropped and soon to be sent to our webmaster. Tentative launch is the first week or two of April. Still plenty of time to order before we stop taking orders in September. Thanks again for your patience this year.
03/18/2012 - Peony field jottings...
A friendly reminder to watch how your tulips are coming up. Yes tulips! For all gardeners in Zones 2 to 4, once your tulips are 2 to 4 inches above the ground remove 1/2 of your winter mulch. In another week, remove the rest of your mulch and discard. We are in the process of removing the first half of our mulch here in zone 4a. DO NOT keep mulch on your plants after the tulips appear as this winter did not see the depth of frost that we usually have based on the drought of last summer and a very dry fall. Ground needs moisture for frost and without moisture, very little frost. More info forthcoming based on spring rainfall but for now, DO NOT WATER your first year plants after removing the mulch. We want the first year roots to slowly acclimate to their new site before drowning them out. IF we have normal spring rains, you do not need to water in first year plants. Happy Spring!
03/10/2012 - The Robins are here!
Yahoo! Went out to walk Redd and Brownie this morning and the sounds/sights of spring are starting. Very fun! Okay so I am very late with getting about 2500 pictures cropped down for launching our 2012 website. Sorry for the delay this year as my arm has kept me delayed on many things this past year. PLEASE be patient as the emails are coming in fast and furious and appreciate you hanging in there with me. My hopes and prayers are do be done cropping today and then our webmaster will take it from there. Can't wait to show you some of our new varieties releasing this year. Very cool and back to cropping! Okay so one more update, had my 10-week check up on Thursday and Dr V said he was very pleased that I have pain in my wrist. WHAT? Yes it is true that the radial nerve was damaged in my elbow (pain is now gone from my elbow) and the nerve is slowly healing down my arm with fingers being the last event. WOW! Who would've thunk that pain in wrist is good. He is thinking another 4 months before I'm somewhat back to physically normal. Of course I didn't tell the Doc that 2 weeks ago Luke, me and some friends went to Michigan snowmobiling and put on 372 miles in two days...sorry dear, forgot to mention pushing it a little but what else is new! Happy almost spring!
02/03/2012 - Update on Fine Gardening peony article.
IF you do not subscribe to this magazine, it is not for sale in the stores until Feb 14th. Sorry, guess you will have to wait until then or you can order it ahead of time at www.FineGardening.com. Enjoy!
02/03/2012 - Fine Gardening article...
Appears like the peony article is out in this months Fine Gardening magazine. We haven't seen it yet but based on all the calls we are getting, sounds like it is amazing. Please pick one up or better yet subscribe to that wonderful publication. For those of you who are visiting us for the first time, welcome! Swenson Gardens is the largest organic peony grower in the US and we strive to produce a far superior bare root stock than any other grower out there. Please spend some time on our website and be patient as our 2012 website should be out in March. At that time you are able to order our roots online or mail order. We are also open during bloom time on Friday's and Saturday's for public visits to our fields in Howard Lake, MN. Until then enjoy and happy gardening!
02/03/2012 - Update on Keith...
Hello friends! This is Keith saying thank you for all your thoughts and prayers! Has been a long road the past 6-months, but there is a flashlight at the end of the tunnel. My latest check up a week ago revealed the fact that the rebuilding of my triceps tendon and radial tunnel syndrome release was a success. Very painful recovery but at least my mobility has increased to 50% of normal. Better than the 30% before surgeries. I go back in 5 weeks and he said I should be up to 80% mobility by then so we could then start to strengthen my arm again. So being able to type with two hands are a Godsend. Time to start cropping the 2,500 new pictures I took last season and get the good ones ready to upload to our 2012 website. With my longer recovery from the surgeries, please be patient with our 2012 website launch as we are running a little late. Will update as we progress but hope to launch in March. Stay tuned and think SNOW! We are still brown on the ground and getting concerned about some of our 2 and 3 year old plants that went into winter already stressed with the ongoing draught. Thankfully peonies are very hardy and forgiving as they still are asleep.
01/11/2012 - Updates
The past few weeks have been a blur. With Christmas activities and Keith's ongoing arm saga, almost wish it was spring and I know Keith would too as he is in week 2 of a 10 week recovery. His surguries finally appear to be successful but because radial nerve was damaged due to the entrapment, that could take at least a year to recover. Thankfully he had this done now as nerve could have partially severed. This, AGAIN, confirms the fact that I have a very special husband and Dr V and staff also now call him their SPECIAL patient. We will not be updating our blog over the next couple of months so please check back in March for further updates. Lots of changes coming as we start to update our website for 2012. Our hopes are to be open in March but it may slip into April with all the recovery stuff going on with our special gardener! Thanks again for your thoughts and prayers!
12/16/2011 - More surgeries for Keith's arm
Please keep Keith in your thoughts and prayers on December 27th. His Dr informed him that he is now the 3rd patient over the past 37 years of arm surgeries that will require 2 more procedures to rebuild his right forearm. Keith is anxiously awaiting the next surgeries as the pain is on a 7 to 8 scale most of the time. The final diagnosis is Radial Tunnel Syndrome and Tennis Elbow release surgeries. About 2 hours in surgery and depending on extent of tennis elbow release damage a 3 to 6 month recovery. Dr says a 80% to 90% usage of arm after these surgeries which is a significant improvement over the 30% usage he is at now. The biceps tendon attachment is doing fine and once he started to use it this fall, the other two issues came back. I know he is special but the Dr didn't believe him when he said he is the 1/2 of 1% patient...well he finally believes him. His surgeries are at 10 am on the 27th. Will update you again once we know the extent of the damage. I can't believe his tolerance of pain level as this has been affecting him since July/2010. Men...can't live with them and can't live without them.
12/16/2011 - Let it snow?
Hello almost winter friends! For those of you who have experience with 'brown' Christmas's, might we join you this year? Having been blessed with 'white' Christmas's the past few years, it sure is strange to not have snow. We did receive some snow back in November, but as of late just some much needed rain. The first year plants are now all mulched in and ready for their long winter nap. Friendly reminder though for Zones 2 to 4, you should have your first year plants mulched in. If not, please add about a 6" layer of shredded wood mulch, straw, chopped corn stalks or pine bows to your 2011 plants. DO NOT use leaves or grass clippings as they do harbor diseases and the also sufficate the site location. IF you did use leaves or grass clippings, we would suggest to remove and replace with those listed above. We use chopped corn stalks that we round bale up and cover our entire rows. We are also starting to work on our 2012 website and hope to launch in March. Until then please be patient as we have a few surprises for you next year. Have a blessed and safe Christmas and a Happy New Year!
11/16/2011 - Peony field jottings...
Almost 2 months and counting without any moisture. Forecast MAY have some white moisture in store for this Saturday. Danny has been busy watering in the last of our new plantings for this fall. Thankfully with Keith's arm still bothering him, he only had the planting crew plant 1200 instead of the 3300 like last year. He is waiting for round two of a cortisone shot in his elbow as the Dr didn't want to overwhelm him at first with 3 separate problems versus the 2 he has had surgery on. Those two are doing fine it just the triceps tendon that is still a problem. If the cordisone doesn't reduce pain, he could be facing a long recovery over winter with this possible surgery to repair his triceps tendon. Please remember him in your thoughts and prayers as its now coming up to 16-months of living in extreme pain. Thankfully we are nearing the end of the peony work so rest from driving the tractors may be what it takes to finally allow time to heal these injuries. Trust all your fall chores are done for the year and you too can bask in some welcome relief from this crazy growing season. Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours!
10/10/2011 - WATERING ALLERT!
For those of you and us, who have experienced an unbelievable dry fall, please give ALL of your peonies one last drink for this year. Roughly speaking about 1 1/2 gallons to 2 gallons of water. IF you have received normal rainfall this fall, DO NOT WATER your peonies. They are just fine for their winter slumber.
10/10/2011 - Peony Shipments

09/21/2011 - Peony field jottings...
With this strange year in all of the peony growing zones, please note that yes it is okay to cut any peonies down 2 to 3 inches above ground especially in zones 2 to 6 if they are brown or showing signs of going dormant. Those of you in zones 7 and 8, for sure you should cut your peonies down now to encourage dormancy. With the 26 degree weather we had last week, we are in the process of cutting down our plants now. Make sure to remove all foliage away from the site and discard. DO NOT COMPOST PEONIES IF YOU INTEND TO USE ON YOUR PEONIES. OKAY TO COMPOST AND USE ELSEWHERE IN YOUR GARDENS. Happy fall chores!

08/30/2011 - Update from Keith
Hello friends! Keith here and yes I am typing with two hands. My 4 week check up went very well and doc said I can get rid of the sling, okay to lift 1 to 2 lbs and yes dear, it is okay to trim roots as long as I do not lift. I go back in another 4 weeks and if all checks out, I could be back to normal in another 2 weeks. The surgeon has been doing hand/arm surgeries for 37 years and I am his 8th patient who has had this type of bicep tendon detachment where it did not curl up. Thanking the great Lord that the recovery is going well and yes friends, I will try to behave myself! Thanks for your thoughts and prayers!
08/30/2011 - Last day to order for Zones 6, 7 and 8 coastal is 9/23/11!
Friendly reminder for peony gardeners that we have a few weeks left before all ordering for 2011 is over. Also for our friends in other zones, yes it is okay to order, however, they will not be shipped out until early to mid October. Thanks!
08/29/2011 - Peony Barn Sale!
For those of you who have inquired regarding this, yes we will be having this again during peony pick up days on 9/10/11 and 9/17/11 from 9 am to 5 PM. Stay tuned for more info and please note that credit cards will not be accepted only check and cash. Rumor has it that Luke and Danny will also be selling honey from their bee keeping operation. Luke won two grand champions ribbons at the Wright County fair and is going to the MN State fair with those projects tommorrow. Britta is also taking her quilt to the state fair and wish them much success. Happy Gardening!
08/29/2011 - Peony field jottings...
If your peony folliage has dried up and/or turned brown for any weather related issue, cut off to the ground anytime. Tou do not need to wait for the first hard frost. Hope this helps for those of you who have been calling. Since this is our busiest time of the year, we appologize for not returning calls and emails in a timely manner.
08/29/2011 - Blog specials are over for 2011!
Please note that our specials are over for 2011 and we will be returning all recently received orders that still note specials. Sorry but we posted previously that they were over on 8/26/11.
08/29/2011 - Let the digging begin!
The digging season at Swenson Gardens has officially begun! Danny is heading up the digging crew this year and is doing a great job. They are halfway done and enjoying the cooler temps versus the 85 and 90 degree temps last year. Roots are looking great and praying that the rain holds off this week. The dividers, headed up by Kari who has been with us for 6-years started tonight as well. Keith got yelled at by the dividers as he was trying to trim roots without his Dr's approval. thankfully he is going in for his 4-week post surgery checkup so he said he will ask Dr for his approval or ? Happy digging!
08/17/2011 - Late Summer Doings
A Friendly Reminder for those of you in zones 2-5: the last day to order is Friday, August 26. It's hard to believe that we are coming to the end of the 2011 peony season! The digging and dividing crew are anxious to get going. Thanks again for your prayers and concern for Keith's arm. His cast was removed yesterday, but he is quite sore today. We received 2.5" of rain last night so the roots are nice and plump. Happy Gardening!
08/08/2011 - Update on Keith
Sorry for delay as we also just finished with our county fair. No wonder his arm has been in pain for a year as Dr said the bicep tendon had been fully detached for some time. Dr reattached with screws by way of a new technique which gives arm 50% faster healing and 98% usage in 6 to 8 weeks. No activity for 2 weeks and thankfully they put his fingers to shoulder hard cast. Hope it holds up as 1 week of it is way too much for him. Strong pain meds somewhat work on him but his high threshold of pain takes a lot to knock him out. Thanks for your thoughts and prayers!
08/01/2011 - BLOG SPECIALS!

08/01/2011 - Tomorrow's surgery
Hello friends, Keith here. This will be my last blog entry for a few weeks. I am looking forward to my surgery tomorrow morning as the pain has taken a toll on me since last January! Please pray for the surgery to go well and that I will be patient as the healing takes its course. Thankfully I've been able to talk with a couple of people who have had their bicep tendon reconstructed and they are doing great. I'm not the sit around kind of person so this should be interesting! Becky will update once the results are in. Thank you!
08/01/2011 - Peony field jottings...
How do you gardeners in the south survive during 90+ degree days? We have to continueally pinch ourselves as so far this summer, not even into the hot months, we've had 14 days of 90+ degree temps. Throw in 75 degree dewpoints and we've been in sauna's with lower temps and humidity! Today brought us another 2 1/2 inches of rain with 60 mph winds. Peonies are holding up better than us! Happy gardening and please drink lots of water and take breaks as much as possible!
07/15/2011 - BLOG SPECIAL!
Okay collectors, go to our 'How to order' page, print off the 'order form' and if you mail in any new order with a 'good' personal or cashiers check, buy one collector's peony and get the second one of equal or less value at 50% off. FOUR (4) total collector's peony maximum. Orders have to be received no later than July 31, 2011. Sorry but credit cards are not acceptable, valid only on new orders and product availability subject to change. Thanks and happy gardening!
07/15/2011 - Finally some good news for Keith's arm!
On August 2nd Keith is going in for surgery on his distal bicep tendon rupture and index trigger finger. What was thought to be a forearm injury was actually the symptom versus the core issue. They will be reconstructing his bicep tendon with a spare tendon from his wrist and the trigger finger is just an incision to open up the index finger tendon sheath. Out patient surgery, 6 to 8 week recovery and full use withing 3 to 6 months. He was going to wait until the fall busy schedule but our 3 dividers and digging crew fired him from that aspect of our business for this year. With 40% current usage of his right arm, the Dr gave him a 100% success outcome after 6 months and tendon will be stronger than its original design. Keith thought it was funny as most people who rupture their bicep tendon are between 50 and 60 years old, weight lifters and heavy manual laborers. He smiled at the doc and said I guess I win then! Will let you know the outcome after surgery and please pray for him that day. About a 1 1/2 hour procedure for both and knowing my hubby, he asked the Dr if that day they have a buy one surgery get one free offer? Oh well, that's Keith!
07/11/2011 - Another miracle in the field!
The 100's of peonies that were blown over from the July 2nd storm are now standing tall! These peonies simply amaze us daily! Thank the good Lord that last nights storm did not cause any additional damage as it went north of here. We are also thankful that the cover crop has worked well with weed control. The weeding crew is wondering what to do now that the cover crop has prevented about 80 to 90% weed suppression. More info coming this winter on how home gardeners can benefit from cover crops. This is going to change how we view our gardens and for us our fields. Happy gardening!
07/06/2011 - BLOG SPECIALS!
Okay gardening friends read carefully! Go to our 'How to order' page, print off the 'order form' and if you mail in any new order with a personal or cashier's check (drum roll please) buy one intersectional and get the second one of equal or less value at 50% off! PLEASE NOTE JOANNA MARLENE IS NOT INCLUDED IN THIS BLOG SPECIAL. Orders have to be received no later than July 31, 2011. Sorry buy credit cards are not acceptable, valid only on new orders and product availability subject to change. Check back often as more BLOG SPECIALS will be forthcoming! Please note that the last day to order in Zones 2 to 5 is August 26, 2011. Some varieties are starting to sell out so get your orders in today. Thanks and happy gardening!
07/06/2011 - Storm number four!
Last Friday evening was not a good day on our farm. Numbers of trees were blown over with the 75 mph winds that accompanied the three separate storms that evening. Unfortunately 100's of peonies were blown over and daily checking since then reveals most stems are still intact with the crown. Thank the good Lord that 80% of the field is still intact in Howard Lake and our Delano field was spared from any damage. For those of you who may have had wind damage to your peonies, let them lay on the ground where they are as the less you handle them the better. Only cut off stems if they turn brown or remove if completely ripped off. Thankfully this happend later in their growing cycle as they will/should come back next year however though, somewhat smaller as they did not receive as much energy through the foliage and down to roots through the stems.
07/06/2011 - Update on Keith's arm...
He is going to see a hand/arm surgeon on July 12th. He said it gets to a certain point and then goes out again and again. Please pray for him as he is very discouraged. Thanks!
07/06/2011 - And the winner is?
Our color is now officially gone for 2011. We may still get some rogue blooms from our intersectionals but the winner for the latest bloom is...at tie between Rose Pearl and Ruth Cobb. Rose Pearl started to bloom on June 16th and is now done on July 6th. Ruth Cobb started a week ago and blew threw her blooms very quickly in this heat. If you haven't tried Rose Pearl, you are missing our most fragrant and late blooming variety!
07/06/2011 - Zones 2 and 3?
Rumor has it that your early to mid and mid blooms have arrived! Now it is your time to enjoy the blooms as most of us are now green! Happy bloomtime!
07/06/2011 - Spent blooms?
For those of you who have been emailing and calling us regarding what to do, here it is: When the last bloom has turned brown, wait about 2 weeks and then okay to cut off underneath the bloom. Try to keep as much foliage on the plant as energy through the foliage produces next years new growth.
07/06/2011 - Zones 6 to 8a
For those of you who are sweltering in the heat and lack of rain and are choosing to water your peonies, make sure your site location has a chance to dry completely down to the roots before watering again. Normals are 1 1/2 gallons of water one time per week. If peonies go brown sooner, do not try to revive with additional watering. That is their way of saying enough is enough. If you are at that point, okay to give them 1 1/2 gallons of water this month and one time later in August. They will/should come back next year as smaller plants until somewhat normal growing conditions return! Happy gardening!
06/19/2011 - Happy Father's Day!
For those of you who are blessed to still have your dad, please give him a call or visit him today. This day is to say thank you for putting up with us. Yes I say that lovingly but hopefully you know what I mean! If it wasn't for my dad who is now 86 years old, Swenson Gardens would not be a reality. My dad taught me to love all of God's creations equally. Yes I am partial to peonies; however, my dad has instilled this 'love' for even the sparrows and dandelions. I remember my mom trying to chase the sparrows away from our bird feeder and then seeing my dad secretly feeding them in back of the house away from her view. This still makes me smile thinking about it. How has your dad made you smile? Remember that smile and tell him how he make you smile today or if he is not here with you today, tell someone else how your dad makes you smile! Thanks dad and I love you!
06/19/2011 - Peony Field Days Over for 2011
Hello again gardening friends. Thank you to all who came out to our 2011 Peony Field Days. We trust you had a great time enjoying the beauty of peonies and our commitment to growing peonies the natural way. For those of you who were fortunate to view them in our Howard Lake field, we and hopefully you, were able to see first hand how well this field faired amidst the extreme weather conditions of fall/2010 to this spring. It simply amazes us how well peonies grow when they are grown organically just like Grandma and Grandpa use to do. The less attention you pay to them, the better they grow. We look forward to next years Peony Field Days and hope that you may be able to join us next year. In the mean time, make sure to get your orders mailed back in so we can update availabilities on our website. Happy gardening and think n' pray, SUN!
06/18/2011 - PEONY FIELD DAY CANCELLED AS OF 3:30 PM 6/18/11!
Another nasty storm just came up. We have cancelled the remaining field day. This is our last field day for 2011. Thank you!
06/16/2011 - Peony Field Day Updates
We are looking forward to seeing you on 6/17 and 6/18 from 9 am to 5 PM at our Howard Lake farm. Be sure to use MapQuest and type in our address of 10958 70th Street SW, Howard Lake, MN 55349. With all the rain as of late, roads are in poor condition. If coming from east of Howard Lake on hwy 12, we suggest going to County Road 5 which is about 3 miles west of Howard Lake on hwy 12. Also, field is VERY muddy so wear boots and long pants and shirts as it is quite buggy! Fun right? Bloom time is now over for all early's to almost mid's. Some late's are just starting to show some color in buds. Overall, field is 40 to 50% in bloom. Those of you who came out last weekend experienced the peak bloom in this crazy spring weather. Britta's cut flowers will be available as well as Luke's refreshments. We will note a voice announcement at 763.350.2051 if bad weather is occuring. You may want to bring some rain gear just in case some of the weather forecasters are correct. Have a safe trip and for other stops along the way we highly suggest Sunni's Grill in Howard Lake for a bite to eat and Cattail Corner on hwy 12 as you enter Howard Lake from the east has some wonderful annual, perennial and vegetable plants available for sale. Enjoy and have safe travels!
06/14/2011 - Peony field jottings...
Rain started around 4 PM today with 1 to 2 inches predicted. Thankfully no HAIL and high winds. Yes plants need some moisture but rain in bloom time washes out the colors and makes it harder on the cut flower team. They are waiting for some of the lates to mature as some wonderful cuts come out of that bloom time. Most of the corals have disappeared from the field. Peony field days on 6/17 and 6/18 should include some/most of the lates depending on the next few days. Happy gardening and please be patient in zones 2 and upper 3! We are starting to hear reports of early's showing some color.
06/13/2011 - Peony Field Days Update
Thanks again for all you brave gardeners who endured the elements on Thursday PM and Friday am. For those of you who came out on Saturday, was that perfect or what? You couldn't have prayed for a nicer day! It was fun to see old friends as well as making new friends. Field is now starting to show more mid to late varieties. Thinking the upcoming Peony Field Days on the 17th and 18th should see some late blooming varieties. Happy gardening and for those of you who have asked, my right arm is healing nicely. For now, no surgery is required as long as I do not lift or cast a fishing rod. You are all very kind!

06/10/2011 - Peony Field Day Updates
Thank you to all who came out to our peony field today. The morning started out quite cold, windy and overcast. By middle afternoon it was absolutely gorgeous! Tomorrow, 6/11 appears to be wonderful as far as weather is concerned. Britta will have cut flowers available for purchase and refreshments by Luke will be provided. He wanted to sell hot chocolate this morning as it was quite brisk. Can you say winter jackets after a 103 temp on Tuesday? Field looks like it will be in prime bloom. Again we are located in Howard Lake, MN which is about 50 miles west of Minneapolis on hwy 394/12. Use MapQuest instead of Google. Our address is 10958 70th Street SW, Howard Lake, MN 55349. We will try to answer our phone but it does get very busy during the day. See previous posts for more driving directions once you get west of Delano and then west of Howard Lake. Please note again that our farm is located in Howard Lake, MN and not Delano. Have safe travels and look forward to seeing you tomorrow!
06/09/2011 - Peony Field Days
Looks like rain may come overnight and then clear up in morning. Early to mid and mid blooms still in prime. See you tomorrow!
06/09/2011 - Peony Field Days Update
Okay 50 degree temperature swing in two days? We just came in from working in the fields to get a spring jacket? If you are coming today between 4 PM and 8 PM, wear warmer cloths. Britta will be selling peony cut flowers by the stem or bundles. Color in the field is at 50%. Many corals left and Bartzella just showing. Have a safe trip here and do use MapQuest and NOT Google. 10958 70th Street SW, Howard Lake, MN 55349. Instead of turning south on Keats Avenue just west of Howard Lake on Hwy 12, go to the next road roughly 2 miles farther west and turn south on County Road 5. You will see more signs at that intersection on Hwy 12. 70th Street SW is one mile south of Hwy 12.
06/07/2011 - Peony Field Day Updates
With extreme heat, I've given up trying to predict the peak bloom. Intersectionals are starting to show and should be peaking Thursday or Friday unless we get a snow storm to slow them down. Maybe I shouldn't say that as in March and April we couldn't wait for color. If you can make it on Thursday, June 9th from 4 to 8 PM, that might be best to catch the corals before they are gone. With the heat today, all the very early's and early's are gone. We've never seen anything like this in the field. We are also suggesting to come on the 9th, 10th or 11th as the 17th and 18th may be fairly sparce with color other than some of the stubborn lates and very lates that are not showing signs of opening even with the high temps. Thankfully the temps are coming down but if you look at Friday PM and some of Saturday...yes thunderstorms. Please make sure to call us at 763.350.2051 as we will have a recorded message should storms overtake us...again! At least with all the storm damage we get a new roof on the house and the pole shed. Happy gardening and think cooler temps and NO MORE STORMS!
06/07/2011 - Another record!
Seems like this is the spring of records. 103 degrees today in Minnesota? I had to look again to make sure we are in June let alone over 100 degrees in our zone. Its been almost 25 years since we've seen temps like this. The old record for today was 95 degrees. We are now blooming like crazy. The cut flower crew pulled out of the field at 11 am as it didn't make sense to cut plants that are getting sunburn. Add in a 35 mph SW wind and it made for an interesting day.
06/06/2011 - Peony field jottings...
Thanks again for those of you who came out to help last Saturday. A special thanks goes out to Chris who truly was an angel in disguise for us. Our cooler stopped working so all the cuts had to be rushed to another friends cooler before they opened. Chris and Luke were able to get the cooler working again. The field is marked and ready to go for the field days. Now all we need is a few hundred people to each remove a few dozen weeds and we will be good to go for another week or so. For those of you in other zones who experienced a wetter and less sunny spring, you may notice that your blooms are not as big as usual. This is very normal and unfortunately the way it is. Maybe next spring will be sunnier for all of us so the blooms will be back to normal sizes. Also for those of you who are still in a wetter than normal pattern, remove any mulch/rock/fabric/plastic at least 2 feet around the stems so your site location can dry out. Also, with this wet spring, our nemiss 'botrytis' is on the prowl. Getting your site dry and good ventilation arount your plants may help. Happy gardening!
06/06/2011 - Website friends...
Okay gardening friends that cannot make it to our Peony Field Days, stay tuned for an upcoming blog post that will tie into our long lost 'Specials' page. With all the events of this past year, the 'Specials' page has been overlooked. Happy gardening!
06/06/2011 - Peony Field Days
If this is your first visit to our Peony Field Days, please note the following: You will be walking in one of our production fields. Varieties are marked in the rows. Please walk parallel with the rows and do not cross over rows as last year we had numbers of plants that were damaged. Please monitor this as we all want to get to the next row quicker so please go to the end of the rows before going on to the next one. The field is rather bumpy and does have a slope to it so plan accordinly. We would love to direct you to certain plants knowing that walking this much may be hard for some people. We do have a sitting area next to the driveway and field where you may drop people off at. You are welcome to tour our gardens but please stay away from the animals as the fences are electric. Britta will again be selling peony cut flowers and bouquets. Luke will be selling refreshments and treats. You are welcome to bring a blanket and picnic lunch to enjoy on our farm. A restroom is also available onsite. Parking will be different this year as all the rain has soaked our normal parking area. We will guide you to the parking area once you drive next to our informational area. Dogs are very welcome on our farm as long as they are on a leash, do not take them into the peony field and please pick up after them. Children are welcome to come as long as they are with an adult. Should any storms occur, please contact us at 763.350.2051 for any last minute changes. Enjoy!
06/06/2011 - Additional Peony Field Day Thursday, June 9th from 4 PM to 8 PM
Please join us at our peony field in Howard Lake for an informal Peony Field Day for 'bloggers'. Knowing how fast the field is blooming with the high temps, this may be your only chance to see some of the early and early to mid blooms before they are gone. Again if you haven't been here before, please use MapQuest instead of Google for directions. Address is 10958 70th Street SW, Howard Lake, MN 55349. Good news if coming from MPLS/St Paul, highway 12 is now finished west of Maple Plain! No more detours on 394/12 West! Bring a friend and enjoy a cooler evening in the peony field!
06/06/2011 - Peony Field Days!
The Howard Lake field will be open to the public on June 10th, 11th, 17th and 18th from 9 am to 5 PM. Use MapQuest instead of Google. Address to put in is 10958 70th Street SW, Howard Lake, MN 55349. Only change is once west of Howard Lake on hwy 12, instead of turning south on Keats Avenue, go about 3 miles farther west and follow signs south on County Road 5. More info to follow.
06/06/2011 - KABOOM!
Okay so the 3 hail storms, 11 1/4 inches of rain, 60 mph winds and late spring couldn't hurt the peonies, so with 94 degrees today and same for tomorrow, the blooms are appearing hourly. This truly has been a spring to remember. The Howard Lake field is now about 30% in color so we are expecting the peak to occur later this week just in time for our field days. The cutting crew went absolutely nuts today as blooms that were too tight to cut opened within a few minutes of passing them by. They did a great job and for sure hydration and air conditioned vehicles were a must. The key tomorrow is to cut early and late as high mid day temps really stresses the blooms when cut during that time.
06/03/2011 - Saturday, June 4th, 10 am to 4 PM
For those of you who may be interested in spending a day and/or a few hours in the field tomorrow helping us out and learning a few tips from Keith, definitely wear long pants, good shoes that you don't mind getting dirty and leather gloves should you be willing to help with weeding. Also bring your cameras as most of the very early's and early's are in bloom. Looks like it is going to be a great day to spend in the peony field! Good luck trying to keep up with Keith! Enjoy and happy gardening!
06/01/2011 - Saturday, June 4th from 10 am to 4 PM
Okay gardening friends, Keith here and I'm asking for your help. As Becky mentioned in previous post, we are so far behind with field work that we really don't know where to turn other than to ask you for help. Since our field days are not till next week and some early varieties are blooming in the field, would you be willing to come out to our farm for a day in the field with me? I/we need help with setting up field variety signs, tents, yes some weeding and for sure a hands on event to spend time with me in the field. Bring your cameras as some of the varities are in bloom and we may be hybridizing some of our breeder plants. This is truly a special time for me to share our passion with you. Use Mapquest for directions as Google still does not have it right. Our address is 10958 70th Street SW, Howard Lake, MN 55349 or call us at 763.350.2051. Rain or shine we are in the field preparing for next weeks field days. Interested? It will be fun!
06/01/2011 - A new addition to our family!
At 11 am this morning, 'Dusty' was born to a very proud mom named 'Mabel'. Mabel is a red Dexter cow and Dusty is a dunn Dexter bull calf. Keith was very anxious to get in the peony field tonight to start taking next years photos, but his help was required to get Dusty drinking from mom's fountains of life. After a couple of hours working with him and having to rope Mabel and tie her up, Dusty finally got the hang of it. Somehow Keith managed to do this with one good arm and was spared many attempts by Mabel to gore him and charge him. Thank the good Lord for the power of prayer as He surely protected Keith from another trip to an emergency room. This was our first calf ever born to our family. Luke, Danny and Britta are raising organic grass fed beef that they will be selling this fall. More info on this to follow should you be interested in pre buying some choice Dexter and Scottish Highland beef. Now back to peonies on my next post.
06/01/2011 - Peony field jottings...
Skipper! Another 4 inches of rain over Memorial Day Weekend. Yes some more hail and add in high winds so the fields took some more hits...literally! If you are able to come out to our 'Peony Field Days' the intersectional hybrids are no worse for wear! They simply are amazing to see how much adverse weather they can take. We are so far behind with field work knowing that as of today, we've only been able to work in the fields for 4 days. More color is showing now in Howard Lake and cut flowers are starting tomorrow in Delano field. First up for cuts are 'Red Charm' and then the corals are not too far behind. More posts to follow.
05/26/2011 - Let the blooms begin!
The winners for first blooms this year are 'Rose Nobel' and 'Nova' in our Delano field and Howard Lake field has yet to show any colors. With cooler temps still in the forecast to Sunday, blooms are behaving normally. Should Memorial Day truly bring the 85 degree temps, make sure to check the postings in our blog as we may add some earlier dates to accommodate the very early blooms. Fun time of year...finally, as they are starting to wake up. Happy gardening!
05/24/2011 - Peony Field Days!
Okay it is almost official! Keith has given the go ahead to announce at least a few dates to mark on your calendars. We will also me adding more dates once we see IF the weather holds over the next week or so. Keep tuned in to our 'Blog' for more information and directions to our Howard Lake farm as this develops. I'm just glad Keith finally gave me the green light to let you know the dates: June 10, 11, 17 and 18 from 9 am to 5 PM. We are so excited for you to see these wonderful plants as well as opening up our farm for you and yours to enjoy. Again, stay tuned!
05/24/2011 - Storms end results!
After high winds, 7 1/4 inches of rain, (2) hail storms and a few rainbows, the peonies are still standing! I love these plants! Let nature throw everything it can as they/us are doing fine! Yes some bruised buds, broken stems and missing foliage are present, but they are still standing tall! Thank you for your emails, thoughts and prayers!
05/21/2011 - 8:00 PM CST the storm is over...for now.
Thank the good Lord our Howard Lake field is still standing. We had a chance to view it and other than a few broken stems per plant, some bud damage and lots of shredded foliage, they came through better than I thought after seeing about 1 to 2 inches of hail depth with diameters of hail up to 1 inch. Unfortunately our breeder plants did not fair as well. Looks like we will have to wait another year on our hybridizing as they look terrible. Yes they will make it, but many broken stems below the buds. For those of you who have been to our farm, the area south of our peony field was 1/2 covered with water and to the west of our driveway, water was coming over it. I looked at the rain gauge and had to do a double take, 3 inches fell since this morning. That brings our total out here to 5 inches since the rain started late Thursday night. To make matters worse, after the storm passed and sun was out, we were pelted with quarter size hail. We're still waiting for report on our Delano field as that is our main cut flower field. My how things change since we posted this morning. Like our daughter always says, 'you never know daddy, you never know!'. She is very wise. Have a great evening and trust all of you are okay with thess storm systems that have beseiged the US this year.
05/21/2011 - Wild weather day!
Hi friends! We are sitting in our basement office waiting for some massive thunderstorms to end. It just keeps getting wetter and wetter! Ground was white with 3/4 to 1 inch hail that lasted about 15 minutes. Thankfully the peonies were not in bloom yet as our tulips, magnolia tree and crab trees are almost bloom free. One more storm to go and will give you an update on how our Howard Lake field came through the storms. Thankfully the hail did not affect our Delano field. Keep smiling!
05/21/2011 - Update on Redd
I tell you, this almost 2 year old lab is about to do me in! 3 weeks ago he had his vaccinations. 2 weeks ago he had a reaction to a vaccine. Another vet trip and was doing fine. 1 week ago he ate some rocks and pine needles. Another vet trip and had to feed him water with a turkey baster. didn't think he would make it through the night but Sunday PM, he started to come around. This past Wednesday his fever broke and on Thursday, HE'S BACK! Not sure how his brain is wired, but we feed him healthy food and then he went into the granary and ate a tub filled with chicken droppings and he opened a back of wood shavings for dessert. Last night after supper he ate leftovers from our burn barrel. Thinking it was some new exotic dessert made out of burned cereal boxes and food scraps. I give up! I still love him as he is such an angel when he is in his kennel.
05/21/2011 - Field Tour Updates
I know Becky has been updating you based on my guessing the correct weekends to open. I was all set to tell her to post but now have holding off until we get through this continual rain and upcoming cooler temps. With all this moisture, the fields are like a mud pit. We can't even walk in the fields as our boots sink down a half of foot or so. Stay tuned as this develops and do pray for drying weather for the farmers and growers in the rain drenged areas. Thanks!
05/21/2011 - Peony field jottings...
Our weeding crew made it in the fields one day this past week before the radar lit up again with more rain. So far since Thursday PM we've received over 2 inches of rain and it is still coming down. It is what it is! Early's are budding out and late's are up about a foot.
05/21/2011 - Wilting peonies?
Yes we are experiencing peonies in the fields and display gardens that are wilting. For some of you this too may be happening. Why do they wilt? Too much rain! Basically they are telling us enough is enough. They will come back once the sun comes out. Please send sun!
05/21/2011 - Update FROM Keith!
Hi friends! I decided to try and type to test out my right arm. Thank you for your prayers and thoughts as the pain has subsided almost 50%. I'll take it! Yes it is different trying to do things without lifting with my right arm, but guess what? God is Great! He has showed me that it is okay to delegate lifting. Wow what a feat! I am so thankful that this happened as it truly allows me to enjoy what God has given me. Don't want to get too teary eyed as this keyboard may short out. So friends, I'm actually going to keep posting until the pain tells me to stop. Kind of a check point for me. Better than a 6x6 that it normally takes to slow me down. Thanks again and happy gardening!
05/17/2011 - Peony field jottings...
Let the weeding begin. My, my what can change in a year. Last year at this time we were preparing for our first weekend of field tours. This year we are waiting for Keith to finally give the go ahead for dates. He is still pouting due to the current weather temps at night. Yes he said the peonies are looking like they finally woke up, but only the very early varieties have shown bud growth beginning. Tonight was the first time this spring that we could get into the fields. Our weed crew is almost done with their workouts inside and can't wait to get into their favorite time of year. Keith, Danny and Luke are meeting with the local USDA Department this weekend to formulate a new plan of using cover crops to minimize weed growth. Stay tuned for more info on this as we are on the cutting edge working with the USDA in this area. Very exciting to see how this develops. Like Keith says, this is totally different than anything he has ever been involved with. Who knows the ramifications this may have to home gardeners as well. Fun, but busy time as we the official peony growing season has begun. Happy gardening.
05/16/2011 - Peony field jottings...
Let the sun shine in! We can't believe two full days of sun! Though the temps are still cool at night, 35 to 40 degrees, (which by the way is wonderful for bud and foliage production), the 70 degree temps in the day are FINALLY starting to dry out the fields. Rumor has it that we might even walk in amongst the plants tomorrow! Now to just keep an gradual temperature increase to fully stimulate buds/blooms versus the high temps all at once. IF temps continue to hold and growth starts leveling off, Keith might even give me some field tour dates. For now he is not willing to commit other than June. Stay tuned and enjoy spring!
05/10/2011 - Another miracle in the peony field...
Some of you may remember a past post regarding our Howard Lake field, well we can add another one to our life. Last fall we had chopped 15 wagon loads of corn stalks to put on the 3,300 new peonies that we planted last fall after the ground froze. With all the early snow that we received, we did not mulch them as the field was laden with 18" of snow. So we kept the chopped corn stalks near the field and through Divine intervention, did not add them. With the wet spring, cooler temps and not being able to get in the fields even now, IF we had mulched with our normal 1 to 2 feet of corn stalks, not being able to remove them would have rotted out the roots this late in the spring. Can you say thank you Lord! Amen!
05/10/2011 - Peony field jottings...
88 degrees today and nasty storms just went through. Thankfully we did not get the 2 inch hail that happened after it past us. And who said you couldn't see peonies grow. Here in the Howard Lake field the lates are now starting to show. We are not quite there yet to post field tours however when we do open up our fields, the thoughts are to expand the number of days we will be open. This may afford more personal time with gardeners versus only being open a couple of days each weekend. More to follow on that aspect. Hang in there and enjoy the spring! YES!
05/01/2011 - Specials page?
Please be patient as we will be offering our specials page again once we are able to take inventory of our plants once the fields dry up enough for us to walk in them. Our guess is in June that section will be up. For now though, any mail in orders with payment by check/money order, will receive a 5% discount. We do know all of us are in a different economy and that is why we have tried to keep our prices constant with last year. Please though if you have a choice to purchase your peonies from us, we would greatly appreciate it. Since we are the largest organic peony grower in the world, we want to stay that way even though our labor, fuel and equipment costs have gone up. You all are appreciated over the years as your orders help us to promote growing peonies the natural way! Thanks again!
05/01/2011 - Recent updates
We had mentioned previously to please pray for Keith's right forearm, well, please continue to pray for his recovery. He will not need recontructive surgery IF he behaves himself during his 6 to 12 month recovery. This is his 5th week of physical therapy as they try to reduce the inflamation of his torn muscle and tendon. The pain has subsided some but he is having a bear of a time trying to figure out what he can and cannot do. Basically anything he use to do with his palm down, he cannot do any more. So fishing, lifting and driving with his right hand is out. His friends and church members have been a Godsend knowing all the work he had planned to do. Thank you!
05/01/2011 - Peony field jottings...
Don't forget in Zones 2 and 3 to remove your mulch over first year plants as soon as your tulips are 6 to 10 inches tall. Perhaps 1/2 of mulch when they first appear and the rest 7 days later. Our Howard Lake field is now starting to show the early varieties at about 6" tall. Weird as our Delano field has all the varieties showing up to 12 to 15 inches tall. Knowing we are 22 miles west of our Delano field, our guess is about 1 1/2 weeks difference. This year we are working with our local USDA office in developing an erosion plan within our Howard Lake field. We can't give you the final result until we see how it works in this scale until the fall. IF it works, this may forever change how we control weeding in our fields. When and if you can come out to our field tours, you will see quite a change from last year. Although we will have hoes and leather gloves to use for weeding! Happy gardening!
05/01/2011 - Happy May Day!
Though the crocus and daffodils are in full bloom, our peonies are still being stubborn. (do you blame them!) Yes snow flurries in the air amidst 30 degree temps. For those of you who are enjoying color from your peonies, we are so, so jealous! Enjoy and for those of you in Zones 2 and 3, we will continue to pray for you as you somewhat wait also for spring! May you and yours have a wonderful May Day!
04/13/2011 - Snow...again!
Just when we thought spring was here and the peonies were eyeing the surface, colder temps and snow are slowing things down...again! Last year we had our first blooms early May. This year it is beyond our scope of knowledge. Will keep you informed as things develop for our field tours. Our best guess for now is early to mid June. Stay tuned.
03/30/2011 - International Ordering
For those of you who have been inquirying, we will be shipping to all EU countries this year. Please email us at info@swensongardens.com for more details.
03/24/2011 - Ok, enough is enough!
Sorry, I was a little off on measureable snow. Was actually 12" by noon on Wednesday with 3 to 4 foot drifts on our driveway. Needless to say we did not get plowed out yesterday until 3 PM so it was actually a wonderful family day. We're hearing reports from some of our customers that their peonies are starting to show. This is the time of the year that our patience for spring gets the best of us. We just can't wait for our peonies to wake up from their way too long winter nap.
03/22/2011 - Spring anyone?
Here in Zone 4, we are anxiously waiting for another 3 to 7 inches of SNOW! (I don't think so!)For our gardening friends farther south, west and northwest, we are so jealous! May you enjoy your spring! You deserve it! Keith received some good and bad news today regarding his right forearm injury from last July, no surgery but a long recovery from a 6 cm muscle tear and a 3 cm tear of his ligament by his elbow. Be praying for him to take it easy over the next 2 month recovery period. The Doctor wrote a prescription for Britta and Luke to do all the lifting for him. Will see how that goes...for all of them:)
03/07/2011 - Let the gardening begin...at least online for now!
Greetings and happy almost spring. Just a few more updates to load on our website and we are all ready for 2011. Our online store is now open for viewing and ordering. Enjoy and happy gardening!
02/23/2011 - We are getting close to launching our 2011 website!
Thank you for your patience and can't wait for you to see some of our new releases and information. Our webmaster is hard at work and he is thinking 2 to 3 weeks. Hang in there! Our website will be here before spring! After another 15" of snow over the weekend, spring cannot get here soon enough! Happy winter...still!
12/31/2010 - Happy New Year!
May 2011 bring you and yours a safe, healthy and peaceful new year!
12/31/2010 - 2010 Peony field jottings...
As we sit here enjoying another snowfall, we thought it would be nice to look back at 2010. We truly appreciate all our customers and friends. This has been a year of sales growth that we are very thankful for. 2010 had its highs and lows but overall a feeling of thankfulness, again, is in our thoughts and prayers. For those of you who had a chance to come out to the field tours, it was a blast getting to know you and to have the chance of personally showing you these amazing plants. For our online friends, you too will enjoy these thoughts once your plants get to maturity. Their impression on gardeners are a generational love affair that hopefully you will pass on to the next generation. Adding the cooler last spring was certainly a Godsend during the hot temps during cutflowers and the first dig. It was also a Godsend to the digging crew as it seemed they did not want to come out after delivering the roots. We are so thankful to Dan, Brett and Keith for this amazing addition to our business. Of course now they wished it was bigger so they could put a home theater in it to watch their favorite movies during breaks. Our friend Brett also added a shelving system that improved the picking and packing during shipping time. Since orders went up over 50% this year, trying to pick hundreds of orders and thousands of roots, his shelving system saved us and moved us into the next level. We are also very thankful that we had a safe year around all the equipment, dividing knives and travels. Thanks again for making 2010 our best year ever since starting in 2002. Hopefully the word is getting out that we are who we say we are. Enjoy your day and looking forward to updating you in 2011! Happy and SAFE gardening!
12/23/2010 - Merry Christmas!
We would like to extend a heartfelt, Merry Christmas to you and yours as we celebrate the birthday of the Christ Child. Have safe travels and enjoy this time with your family and friends! Love, The Swenson's
12/23/2010 - Peony field jottings...
Welcome to winter, again and again and again, here in Minnesota! 2010 has surely been a year of firsts for us! Whether the weather has been hot, rain and now the most snowfall in December, not including another 2 to 3 tonight, we keep shoveling and shoveling and shoveling. Guessing there is at least 2 feet of snow covering the plants. We attempted to mulch all the new plantings but by the time the ground had frozen enough, we couldn't get into the fields because of all the snow. Keith says we will wait and see what the spring brings as far as thaw/freeze goes. IF the snow cover stays through March, he says we won't have to mulch. YES! In the mean time, 15 silage wagons of chopped corn stalks are sitting idle around the field. This too has been a Godsend to the pheasants, birds and deer for much needed food. Thankfully we were able to get all the fall chores done before Keith hurt his much needed right hand index finger. He seems to be doing okay as the cause of the injury was lack of patience trying to change a tractor tire for the THIRD time at -5 degrees during a recent snow. He has a hard time in the cold with his hands as he has Raynaud's (sp) Syndrome. He couldn't feel his hands and tore a ligament in his finger. Please pray for his 'patient(s)' during this 1 to 2 month recovery. Though we all are recovering from an unbelieveable year of work, we are also anxiously awaiting our new 2011 website which we are estimating the launch in March. Please email us for any changes/additions/helps that you would like us to consider. The video how to's did not get done last fall so that will have to wait until 2012 unless we add some links next fall. Thank you for your patience! Have a wonderful winter and think SPRING!
11/25/2010 - HAPPY THANKSGIVING!
From all of us at Swenson Gardens, we wish you and yours a wonderful Thanksgiving!
11/15/2010 - Peony field jottings...
As you can see by our posts, winter hibernation is slowly befalling on us. All the corn stalks have been chopped and stacked waiting for the ground to freeze before covering all our first year plants. The problem is...8 inches of snow that fell here from Friday night to Sunday morning. Since the ground is not frozen, we are patiently waiting for the ground to freeze. Hopefully it will be before Christmas as a few years ago we were mulching the week before Christmas. It is a somber sight as we gaze over an all white field. Before we know it, spring will be here, right? Happy gardening dreams for now!
10/27/2010 - Zones 2 to 4
For those of you who had snow the past few days, unless the ground is frozen to a depth of 2 to 3 inches, still DO NOT mulch your plants. The snow is fine for your new roots but adding mulch over snow now without the ground being frozen, is NOT good. Winter is not officially here yet (we hope) so continue to hold off the mulching until the ground is frozen. Happy waiting!
10/26/2010 - Zones 2 to 4
Let the winds blow! Hang on Dorothy! With the much needed rain that started on Friday and still continuing today, we are now up to 3 inches. Since the ground is NOT frozen yet, thankfully this rain has kept all the chopped cornstalks in one place instead of depositing them in Wisconsin. DO NOT MULCH any of your newly planted peonies until the ground is FROZEN! Be patient! We don't want to rush winter just yet! Happy gardening!
10/18/2010 - Peony field jottings...
The fields are very bare as the cutting down of all our plants are almost finished. Very sad time of year for us now as we have to gaze upon dirt and soon snow for 6+ months. Oh the joy of the changing seasons! Thankfully the soil has not froze yet so the weeding crew is FINALLY in the fields for the last of those pesky weeds. Rumor has it that Keith has another weed reduction test that he wants to do for next year. Stay tuned as this develops. The newspaper layers and chopped up corn stalks was a bust for us as the weeds did poke through that system later in the summer after the newspaper decomposed. That was not a peaceful time for us as all of that had to be removed by hand in order to get to the weeds. Needless to say that system will no longer be adviseable for us to use. A home gardener could have better results IF they would add more newspaper layers during the summer. Oh well...live, learn and keep trying! Happy gardening?
10/11/2010 - Peony field jottings...
Well the planting is done! We actually planted closer to 3,500 instead of the 4,000+ we had guessed at. Not sure what happened this year in planting other than Divine intervention as it took the four members of our planting crew a total of 9 hours to get them all in the ground and covered up. This had to be our all time record for planting as all of us were able to take advantage of Sunday's, day of worship and REST! For those of you who have just received your orders, please take the time to plant them as soon as possible. For those of you who have planted them...PATIENCE my fellow gardeners! Spring will be here soon. Happy gardening and now we can honestly say, 'please pray for rain' to water in our new plantings! Thanks!
10/06/2010 - Peony field jottings...
Let the planting begin! Our soil is drying up nicely following the rains we had 2 weeks ago. Hard to believe that at this time last year we our first snowfall on the ground. Yes it did melt and allowed us to plant later in October, but the planting crew is very anxious to get all the plants in the ground. Looks like we have a window through Saturday to do just that. Since we prepare our fields 2 to 3 years in advance, the stress level is fairly high knowing that 4,000+ plants need to be planted in the west and east fields. Once the crew gets started, after all the lineouts are organized and counted, they can plant about 100 to 150 per hour. It is quite a site to see and you do need a very strong back for this process. Since we hand set every plant, there is a tremendous amount of bending and twisting. Thankfully all of them have very strong backs and with Keith's strengthening program, he's never felt better...especially when driving his New Holland tractor and hilling the rows with his new 3 pt hiller that was custom made by his new found friend, George Chap of Chap Equipment in Cokato, MN. Enjoy your fall, happy gardening and think SPRING!
10/06/2010 - All orders have now been confirmed and shipped!
Friends, other than the handful of orders that we are holding for various reasons, ALL open orders have now been shipped. For those of you with valid emails, info and tracking information will be forthcoming. Please note for all PO Box addresses, you should check with your local post office daily until your order arrives. Some of you that provided street addresses and PO Box numbers, we had to use what USPS click n ship would allow to use. Since they standardize addresses by your name, they would only allow us to use your PO Boxes. Please check with your local post office regarding your orders as well. You will be able to find that info on your tracking numbers if you receive notice from USPS. We have used USPS Priority Mail over the past 5 years and do date all orders have made it to our customers. Thanks again for the opportunity of providing you with our peonies. Take care of them on arrival and do follow our planting tips included in your orders. Happy planting!
10/06/2010 - Your orders are coming!
Most of the orders were delivered to Post Office today! Enjoy and happy gardening!
10/05/2010 - Late orderers
You too are now in que for picking and packing orders tomorrow. Should they perform the same magic as today for zones 7 & 8s, you could see your orders shipping tomorrow afternoon. Will update more so stay tuned!
10/05/2010 - Zones 7 & 8a
The picking and packing crew were amazing today! Your orders are ready to ship out tomorrow. As we mentioned previously, the 3rd dig and ship was moved up based on recent weather conditions. You will receive confirmation notice via USPS Priority Mail once the packages leave our Howard Lake, MN post office and you provided us with a valid email address. Based on previous history with Priority Mail, they may/should be at your addresses by the end of this week or early next week. Upon receipt, please open the box and store in a cool, dark and dry location until you can plant. If you cannot plant within a few days, take the storage bag out of the box and keep in a cool, dark and dry location for a few more days. Again being an eco-friendly grower and also with our packing materials, please follow the tips regarding the biodegradeable packing peanuts, shipping bag and recycle the box and staples. Thank you for entrusting us to grow your organic peonies and now that they are in your care, enjoy and happy gardening!
10/04/2010 - Zones 7 & 8a orders
We are almost done with the dividing of your roots so stay tuned for your updated shipping times. You should start to see your credit cards being charged in the next day or so. Thanks!
10/04/2010 - Late orderers
For those of you who are calling and emailing regarding your orders that were placed after their zone specific order dates, please be patient as we will start to process your orders as soon as we take care of those who placed their orders in ontime. Yes we try to still fill your orders but we are very busy and may not be able to respond to your calls and emails until we get caught up. Thank you!
10/04/2010 - Zones 5 & 6 Shipping
Friends, those of you who got your orders in by 9/15/10, they are packed and ready to be shipped out on Wednesday, October 6th. We ship via USPS Priority Mail so if you have a valid email address, a tracking number will be emailed to you upon its departure from our Post Office in Howard Lake, MN. Priority Mail does not guaranty 2 to 3 day delivery, however that has been the normal delivery time for most of our customers accross the US. Upon receipt of your orders, please open the box immediately and store in a cool, dark and dry location until you are ready to plant. The packing medium usually lasts a few days to it is much better for your roots to plant as soon as possible. If you cannot plant within a few days, remove the storage bag from the box and place that in a cool, dark and dry location. Also, all packing materials are biodegradeable and recyclable so dispose of accordingly. Yes it costs us more to pack and ship this way, but in the long run it is consistent with our approach to growing our peonies organically and leaving as little footprint on our wonderful earth! Enjoy your peonies! Happy gardening!
09/30/2010 - Zones 7 & 8a
Friends, our online store will be closing tonight after 10 PM (cst). This will be the last chance to order you peonies for this year. Now back to digging, dividing and processing....happy gardening!
09/24/2010 - Peony field jottings...
My, my what another trying week in the life of a peony grower. For those of you who have visited our farm, our driveway south of the east peony field was under water last evening. Perhaps 6 inches deep! Thankfully the driveway held and did not cave in. The former owners of our farm told us about the summer of 2002 when they had to use a boat for 10 days in order to get the the higher areas on the road in front of us. Thankfully through speaking with them about that storm we were then able to locate areas on the southside of the farm where the peonies would be high and dry. That is also the case in our Delano field so standing and flooding is not a concern for us. Unfortunately though with the ground so saturated now and hours of sunlight declining, we cannot continue digging until it dries out. We've been through this before and spending 1 hour to dig 1 peony in the mud is not an option with over 400 plants to dig for the 2nd ship. Thus Netflix looks really, really good for tonights activities. This also allows some family time to support our kids during this chaotic time of year. Tomorrow Luke and Brownie will be competing in the Minnesota State 4H dog obedience show. They've been working very hard and looking forward to this event since the Wright County Fair. Trust your fall chores are going well. Happy gardening!
09/24/2010 - Zones 7 and 8a
As you may have read on previous post, we are almost up to our knees with mud in the peony fields. Ground is very saturated with additional rain forecasted for tomorrow. Thankfully our fields are high and dry without standing water, but I/we wanted to let you know that we will be moving your digging schedule up to coincide with our 2nd dig that will be continuing next week. Thus the September 30th last day to receive orders will be it for this year. We will not be accepting any additional last minute orders after September 30th. Your shipping time should now be in mid-October versus the end of October. We're just aware that with the fall colors 3 weeks ahead of normal and the other signs of late fall with hummingbirds already gone and birds flocking in mass, we don't want to be digging in a snowstorm. Yes we've planted in snowstorms, but that my friends is a different story. Please stay tuned to our blog as we get farther along with your orders. You will see credit charges starting to occur in early October for those of you who have used that form of payment. Also once your order ships and IF you have a valid email address, you will be notified through USPS Priority Mail with a tracking number if you so choose to look up. Happy gardening!
09/24/2010 - Zones 5 & 6
Friends, we are at a standstill with over 5 inches of rain Wednesday PM and all day Thursday. Our digging crew was able to get 1/2 of our dig done earlier this week, but the fields are terrible right now. Hoping/praying that we can get back in them early next week. We should still be on track to shipout in early October. Stay tuned!
09/15/2010 - Zones 5 & 6
Today is the last day to order for our 2nd dig and shipping out in early October. We appreciate all of you who are new to our roots and also those that have been our gardening friends from previous years. Stay tuned for updates as we AGAIN wait for the fields to dry out. So far today over 1 inch of rain and it is still coming down. Happy gardening!
09/11/2010 - Jottings...
Thank you to all who stopped by today. What a glorious fall day to be outside talkin' peonies. For those handful of customers who have not picked up your order and/or have made prior arrangements with Becky, please contact us via email or 763.350.2051 by 9/12/10. Also, we have noticed some online orders coming in from zone 2 to 4 customers, that is fine; however, those orders will be shipped out during our second dig which is coming up in a few weeks. We will post the status of our dig for zone 5 & 6 customers when we get closer. We're still hoping for shipments to go out in early October. Some of you have asked why we do three separate digs and shipments? The quick answer is that we want your roots to arrive at your best planting time. For zones 2 to 4 that is mid-Sept to early Oct, zones 5 & 6 early Oct to late Oct and zones 7 & 8a late Oct to early Nov. Hope this helps! Otherwise, we and the crew are resting up for the next dig. A Sunday afternoon sure looks inviting after the first dig. Happy gardening and good night!
09/09/2010 - Zones 2 to 4 shipments
A friendly reminder to those who have received your order and/or will be receiving soon, please plant them as soon as possible. We're talking a few days vs a few weeks. If you are not planting them the same day they arrive, open the top of your box and then place in a cool, dark area. The shipping medium will last for a few days with an open box. Also all packing materials we use are very earth friendly so please, please, please, recycle and decompose properly. Actually the packing peanuts are great science project as they vanish when placed in water since they are made out of corn starch. Very cool! Enjoy your peonies and happy gardening!
09/07/2010 - Zones 5 & 6 last day to order
Now on to our second dig and shipping schedule. To our friends in zones 5 & 6, the last day to order your peonies for shipping this fall is September 15th. As we received another 2 1/2 inches of rain over the weekend, I don't know how much plumper these crazy peony roots can get. Temps are going down into the low 40's tonight and we hope/pray/trust that the temps during the day will be better for the digging crew during this dig as the dig for zones 2 to 4 was a bear! They dug over 600 plants over 10-days of 80 to 92 degree temps in order to fill our first shipment and leftover retail roots for the garage/barn sale. Sometime you all in zones 5 & 6 will have to come up for our field tours and for this year, this Saturday's barn sale. I don't think the second dig will be as big unless you get your orders in soon! Happy gardening!
09/06/2010 - 2nd Annual Peony Garage or should we say BARN Sale is Saturday, 9/11 from 9 am to 5 PM
For those of you who came out last Saturday, we trust you found just the right root(s) for your garden! It was fun to see all of you and again if you have a peony root that you would like divided, bring it along with you. We'll be giving dividing demonstrations and would love to do surgery on your roots. Also, some of our leftover roots selections are now officially sold out. Some great deals will be available on the remaining leftover roots. If you know of any friends or relatives looking for some great roots, bring them out with you. Also since this is apple season time, there are some great orchards you should check out. Fall Harvest west of Delano and Carlson Orchards just south of Howard Lake are two of our favorites. Don't forget Sunni's Grill and Cattail Corner in Howard Lake as well. The address again is 10958 70th Street SW and zip 55349. Happy gardening!
09/06/2010 - Last pick up day for orders is 9/11/10 from 9 am to 5 PM
For those of you who didn't get a chance to pick your orders up on September 4th, this Saturday, September 11th will be your last day unless other arrangements have been made by calling Becky at 763.350.2051. We will be open from 9 am to 5 PM at our farm in Howard Lake. The address is 10958 70th St SW and zip 55349. Will see you on the 11th!
09/06/2010 - Zones 2 to 4 peony shipment
The bell has finally rung for the first dig! All our shipping orders are done and will go out USPS Priority Mail tomorrow, September 7th. Most of you should receive your orders later this week. Thanks again for the opportunity of nurturing your roots. Soon they will arrive at their new homes. Enjoy and happy gardening!
09/06/2010 - Happy Labor Day!
Trust you all had a chance to relax today! Don't we all deserve it?
08/31/2010 - Zone 2 to 4 Orders
Because we've had a number of inquiries for customers in zones 2 to 4, you may still order online or mail-order, however they will be shipped out in zones 5 & 6 timeframe. No pick up orders will be accepted as of now. Thanks again for all your orders as our business has doubled this season and feel very blessed to grow your future peonies. Thank you also to all of you who have chosen to grow your plants organically.
08/31/2010 - 2nd Annual Peony Garage Sale Saturday September 4th and 11th from 9 am to 5 PM
For those of you who came out last year, we plan to have more roots available as we sold out very quickly. There will be quite a selection as the 'crew' is almost on strike from all the weeding and trying to survive the first dig amidst mosquitos, 85 to 90 degree temps and now an inch of rain last night. For those of you who need directions, please us Mapquest as Google is still off. Our address is 10958 70th Street SW, Howard Lake, MN, 55349. Give us a call at 763.350.2051 for more specific directions as we will not be checking emails as often during this very busy time of year. Also, if you would like to learn how to divide or have a peony you would like divided, please bring it with you and we would be happy to help. Please pray for cooler temps soon as we should be done digging tomorrow...our NINTH day in the field. Happy gardening!
08/25/2010 - Let the digging begin!
We have starting digging for Zones 2 to 4. The roots look absolutely marvelous! WOW! Now we see the joys of our extreme weather conditions really paying off with healthy roots awaiting surgery. As some of you know based on being our long-term customers, WE DO NOT SEND SMALL ROOTS! They have been and will be very generous in eyes as well as storage roots. I personally do not get hung up on lots of eyes as you still need storage roots to support them. Kari, our other divider who is now in her 5th season with us, also agrees with our root divisions. So away we go! With all the orders in and still coming, we've had to hire 7 more people to help us with this process. It is fun to see the excitement in our new and current team as we work to provide you, (in our opinion) the finest bare-root peonies in the US. Did we mention our Peony Garage Sale on 9/4 and 9/11 from 9 am to 5 PM at our farm in Howard Lake? More info coming but it will be bigger and better than last year. Can you say great bare-root peony prices? Stay tuned and happy gardening!
08/23/2010 - Mail Orders
Please make sure to check our website for 'Sold Out' varieties before mailing in your orders. We've tried to accomodate filling those orders but now we are at a point with some varieties that we will not be able to. Thank you for your understanding.
08/21/2010 - Zone 2 to 4 last day to order is August 31, 2010
Can't believe we are almost to the end of our ordering for zones 2 to 4. Please make sure to get your mail in or online orders in by August 31, 2010. Thank you!
08/16/2010 - Peony field jottings...
Nice to be back online with you. As I look back to our last post, we too are awash with rain like our friend were in the NE. 4 1/2 inches last Thurs and Friday. Thankfully our weed crew was able to clean up the field before spending all available time building and ark. Since our season is 2 to 3 weeks ahead of normal, these extra weeks are a bonus for root production. The peonies look great and can't wait to see what is going on underneath the soil. A friendly reminder for our gardening friends in Zones 5 to 8a, DO NOT WATER YOUR PEONIES AFTER SEPTEMBER 1st! We want to encourage dormancy so start putting them to bed after this very hot summer. Also, our 2nd Annual Peony Garage Sale will be held on our pick up days. September 4th and September 11th from 9 am to 5 PM. This is a wonderful time to check out some unbelieveable sale prices on left over retail and line out roots. Sorry buy no prior sales/holding of roots. First come...first served so plan on arriving early. Also, we will be demonstrating 'How to divide peonies' each day so if you have a favorite one you want divided, come on out! Happy gardening and think DRY weather for a change!
08/16/2010 - Blog is back up!
Not sure what was going on but we are back up with our posts. Thank goodness for a great webmaster! Sorry for not posting lately so will post after I send in this test.
07/09/2010 - NE and East Coast Gardening Friends
This is an action alert for our gardening friends that are experiencing the high temps and drought conditions as of late. For our customers who planted peony roots last fall (2009), you may want to slowly pour about 1 1/2 gallon of water around your plants 1x per week for the next 3 weeks unless you receive about 1 inch of rainfall during those weeks. IF you receive that amount of rainfall, DO NOT water that week. Make sure though if you choose to water that the site dries out completely by checking the soil with your fingers about 2 inches under the surface. IF your fingers come out with wet, muddy dirt, hold off on watering until they come out dry. Now for those of you with 2 and 3 year old plants, okay to follow same testing only water 1x every 2-weeks. Those of you with older plants, you may notice the foliage browning sooner as the plants, (and perhaps like you) have said enough is enough. Time to go dormant earlier than normal so we can save up enough energy for next year. In dry, hot years like this, peonies are very drought resistant, however next years new growth/stems and blooms may not be as good as normal growing years. Hope this helps and do email us if you have additional questions. We here in Minnesota are basking in an unbelieveable growing year due to the recent rains and warmer temps. Next years plants should be amazing if it keeps up like it has. Happy gardening!
06/29/2010 - Specials for 2010 about to expire
A friendly reminder that our online specials for 2010 will be expiring on July 1, 2010. This will be our last online specials for this year so mail your order in before its gone. Thanks and happy gardening!
06/11/2010 - Peony field updates...
Okay back (no pun intended) to the peony fields. 3 inches of rain last night and counting! Both fields are an absolute mess with all this rain! Thankfully it came after most of the field tours! Bartzella, Hillary, Canary Brilliants and other intersectionals are now showing their extended bloom times. Maybe a week or so left before all yellow is done in both fields. Amazing that even through all this rain, previous high temps and high winds, the intersectionals are now entering their third WEEK of bloom! We love those varieties! As far as the garden peonies, Candy Stripe is done, however the late pinks like 'The Fawn', white and reds are still going. The cut flower season is over for 2010. The last of the cuts were picked up today from our cooler and what is left goes for the kids 'peony blessing' bouquets. A few years ago the kids decided to bring bouquets to friends, neighbors and senior living homes to offer them a blessing for the day. They will be delivering those next week so the coolers work is done for the bloom time and then cleaned up and ready for the root divisions in the fall. So for now with all the rain and muddy fields...a long nap! Happy gardening!
06/11/2010 - Update on back pain story
The AP story continues to expand its scope nationwide. Today it came out on USA Today's online version. Go to their website, scroll down to 'A Better Life' and click on the 'Health' button. Also, you can see the televised story at www.myfoxtwincities.com and search for 'back pain widely overtreated'. I am amazed at the numbers of people who have emailed and or called regarding the hope that www.pnbconline.com has afforded me. Enjoy your weekend!
06/08/2010 - Back pain article from AP today.
For those of you who are calling and emailing about the article, yes that is me. You may still be able to find it on Yahoo, MSNBC and newspapers. Go to Yahoo and MSNBC and search for the overtreated back pain article in the news and/or health pages. A link to MSNBC is as follows; www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37557062/. You may not know, until now, that when our daughter Britta, was born in the early 90's, I could not hold her even at 8 lbs. Because of a volleyball injury and subsequent failed procedures, including surgery, my life was a mess for 5 years. Instead of going in for more surgery, a new physical therapy stregthening program was just starting at Physicians, Neck and Back Clinic. (www.pnbconline.com) Working with the therapists and Dr Chuck Kelly, hope was offered to me though it would creat more pain at first, but at the end of the 16 week period, life would change. Knowing that I am blessed by being the 1/10 of 1% type patient, it actually took me about 6 months and then 1 1/2 years later, a changed man. When they tested me, I was at 10% of my normal strength and flexibility and when I left, is was at 110% strength and 70% flexibility. I am so thankful for PNBC and the fact that God wanted me to become more active, that today I look at our peony fields and say 'thank you Lord'! Not only for His beautiful plants, but the fact that now our daughter Britta goes piggy back riding...on my shoulders! For those of you who may be suffering from low back and leg pain, there is hope! Can you say gardening! Especially gardening with peonies! Like I said last year, keep walking and today, keep gardening!
06/08/2010 - Happy Birthday Becky!
Yes, she is ?? years old today! This is the first year we've been able to celebrate as a family since the peony cut flower season is now officially over. They made their last deliveries to our wholesaler today so we celebrated! Had a wonderful sushi lunch, the girls went shopping as the boys cleaned the house and had a fresh fruit birthday cake moments ago! Fun to spend sometime as a family with this crazy bloom season. Happy birthday dear!
06/06/2010 - PEONY FIELD TOURS ARE OVER FOR 2010
Sad but true! Thanks again for coming out to our 2010 field tours. What a change yesterday compared to Memorial Day Weekend. Saturday truly took us to the edge with rain, 50 degree temps and those pesky mosquitoes. The hardiest of hardy gardeners still persevered with smiles even though large welts covered any exposed skin. For those of you who were taking pictures, this was a day that I dream about for true color. Before we opened I spent 2 hours photographing for next year's website and another 1 1/2 last evening! This type of overcast really makes the colors pop. Thanks again for our existing and new gardening friends that came out. We certainly enjoyed ourselves and do email us at info@swensongardens.com for any tips and concerns on how we can improve on our peony field tours next year. Happy gardening!
06/03/2010 - PEONY FIELD TOUR
Thanks again to the 800+ gardeners that came out last weekend for our first ever peony field tour in Howard Lake. We hope you loved seeing our farm as much as we LOVED showing it to you. During field tours, you are very much like family as we all can enjoy the beauty of our Creator's handiwork! For you grandmas' and grandpas', thank you for coming out! It was a joy to see the smiles in your faces and the stories of your peonies you use to have in town or on the farm. We will cherish our memory of your memories! This coming Saturday, June 5th from 9 am to 5 PM will be our last field tour of 2010. Every variety will either be starting in bloom or finished. Most of the mid-to-late varieties started today with the every popular Candy Stripe showing its first colors in this field. We will be offering the 15% check/cash discount until the end of the day so for those of you who visited last weekend, please come prepared to turn in your orders. So far we are okay on our Candy Stripes, Coral Sunsets and Barts, but others are starting to sell out. Hopefully our website will be updated with the 'sold outs' tomorrow. We do try to save a few extra for mail in orders and field tours. Britta's Bouquets will again be available on Saturday. She has reworked some of her bouquets so please order your bouquets on Saturday as that is her last day as well. Luke's Refreshments will also be open for beverages and snacks. Mom and dad are so proud of them for taking on this financial endeavor. Who knows what will happen next year as they really took an interest in the field tours. Again if you are using the web for directions, use MapQuest as Google's directions are wrong. the address again is 10958 70th Street SW, Howard Lake, MN 55349. About 4 to 5 miles west of Howard Lake on hwy 12, you will see our signs at Wright County Road 5 south. Also, we received numbers of phone calls for people wanting to bring their dogs along. The answer is YES as long as you do not take them into the peony rows. You can take them for a stroll (leashed of course) around the peony field, a swim in the pond and leashed around our home. Please keep them away from the horses and be careful around children and adults. Thank you! We will have the field tour rain or shine however if severe weather, please call us at 763.350.2051 for more details. Happy gardening and see you on Saturday, June 5th!
06/03/2010 - Peony field jottings...
The cut flower season will be over tomorrow in our Delano field. The only buds left to cut are a few Candy Stripes and the final/last variety to cut are the Ruth Cobbs. With the cooler temps this past week, the cut flower crew seemed to survive better than the previous week. Thankfully on Tuesday night we received about an inch of rain here in Howard Lake and 1/2 inch in Delano. All the no staking varieties are still upright and strong versus the staking varieties that are kissing the ground. Tonight we are expecting some more rain, which of course is very welcome after the bloom is almost done. On a different note, our 10-month old lab, 'Redd' decided to take our 5-year old lab, 'Brownie', swimming yesterday. We don't mind them swimming in the pond, but they decided to go swimming at Lions Park on Howard Lake...about 4-miles away! My, my are they an adventurous pair. We were very concerned and prayed that someone would find them as we spent about 3 hours looking for them. Well Becky received a call that a wonderful gentleman locked them in the mens restroom at the park as Redd was stealing sandles from the beach participants. If anyone from Howard Lake is missing a sandal, please let us know as Redd usually digs them into the ground very close by. Britta, our daughter, gets some strange looks wearing hers as somehow they don't match too well anymore. Thankfully Redd and Brownie are home again except that this afternoon Redd's left eye swelled shut and yucky stuff was coming out. A quick emergency trip to our new vet solved that with 3 types of meds and orders not to go swimming for a couple of weeks. We thought having kids was an adventure? Happy gardening!
05/29/2010 - PEONY FIELD TOURS
The second day of our field tours ended today with some fresh corals, yellows and mid whites blooming. Another day of 92 degree high but thankfully low humidity. Thank you to all who came out to visit today. We trust you had safe travels home and also had a chance to dine at Sunni's Grill and stop in at Cattail Corner. Just a friendly reminder that we will be closed tomorrow, Sunday, May 30th and opening again on Monday, May 31st at 9 am to 5 PM. For those of you who called regarding 'late' varieties, we are leaning to next Saturday, June 5th from 9 am to 5 PM for their color to start showing. The star of the field over the past two days has been 'Coral Sunset'. Today her primary's (main bud) started to show her true sunset colors by the end of the day. By Monday she should be yellow/ivory and then next Saturday her secondary's (side buds) should start the show over again. For those of you who are are new gardening friends, please spend some time on our website reading our 'FAQ' and 'Peony Care' page. And 'YES' there are yellow peonies! Aren't they wonderful?! We would like to wish all of you a safe and Happy Memorial Day Weekend! Time for some much needed rest after a very busy week so we hope to see you on Monday or electronically next week! Happy Gardening!

Hooray! The corals and yellows are coming in Howard Lake! My guess today is 25 to 30% color in the Howard Lake field. Well behind the 75% color in our Delano field. Well friends, tomorrow is the first public tour of our Howard Lake field from 9 am to 5 PM. In case you didn't read the previous post about directions. Please use MapQuest as the Google directions are wrong. Type in our destination of 10958 70th Street SW in Howard Lake, MN 55349. See you tomorrow or 5/29 or 5/31 or 6/5. Sorry for our delays in responding to all your emails and phones calls as we are absolutely swamped this time of year. Please hang in there until we get through the blooms time and field tours. Thank you! Happy gardening!
05/26/2010 - PEONY FIELD TOURS
The Howard Lake field continues to be status quo. We are starting to see some color showing on the intersectionals so we will know more tomorrow. So far about 15% of the field is in bloom. Thank the good Lord for the cooler and less humid conditions. Our cut flower crew didn't have to spend as much time in the cooler bundling blooms tonight. In fact they finished earlier tonight as the bloom slowed down in Delano. The last two nights they finished bundling at 1 am. Makes for a long day when you start in the field cutting at 6:30 am. The crews' motto is 'don't look back, leave everything on the track'! Our daughter Britta will be selling cut flowers at the field tours and has some special 'Britta's bouquets'. She is a budding floral arranger and mom and dad couldn't be prouder. She hasn't set the final prices but bouquets will be in the $10 to $40 range depending on varieties included in the bouquets and cut flower bundles. These will be cash only sales and no credit cards are accepted. Now Luke will be our refreshment vendor. He is anxiously awaiting your arrival as he to is offering many different beverages (NO POP) and snacks for the healthier lifestyles at various prices. Looking at the weather it appears to be a wonderful forecast. IF some of the peonies you are interested in are not in bloom, do stop back again to view the changes in the field. Again the dates are 5/28, 5/29, 5/31 and 6/5 from 9 am to 5 PM. You can stroll through the field on your own or we would love to walk with you and tell you some gardening tips on how to use peonies in your landscaping projects. Also, you are able to walk the grounds of our home to see the annual planting beds done by Cattail Corner and the hard and soft landscaping done by Stoffel's and Associates. Happy peony dreams!

HELP! 92 on Sunday, 95 on Monday and 87 degrees today. These temps are amazing for May let alone August for us. The Delano field popped on Monday and according to the cutting crew, they have never seen anything like this. They would get to the end of the row and look back only to see ones they passed on are now wide open. They seem to be spending extra time preparing the bundles in the 38 degree cooler. Can you blame them? Please pray for their safety in the fields all day as the heat is starting to get the best of them. So the big news, the Howard Lake field is still a week behind based on the micro climate. We're thinking good color for this weekends field tours and prime either on Monday or for the 6/5 field tour. Either way, some of my favorite blooms are just starting, 'Bess Bockstoce', 'Red Grace', 'Red Charm' and the list goes on. No intersectionals yet in Howard Lake. The 11 x 15 cooler is almost full from the Delano field so please contact us if you need some bundles of gorgeous peony blooms. Happy gardening and now back to the cooler to bundle the peonies!
05/21/2010 - Peony field jottings
The cut flower crew officially started today in our Delano field. For those of you in warmer zones, I imagine some of your later varieties are now finished as we start to enjoy our early varieties here. Aren't these plants amazing! Every spring it is a joy to see what blooms first. The winner for us again this year in our Delano field is 'Nova'. A close second was 'Rose Nobel' and in the next positions 'Athena','May Lilac', 'Starlight', 'Rose Diamond', 'Erma', 'Sprite', 'Salmon Dream', 'Sugar n Spice' and 'Fushcia Cuddles'. The corals are just starting as well as 'Red Charm'. Thus the cut flower crew is anxiously watching those varieties in preparation for an extremely quick openning with the hot weather coming. They sometimes cut 4 to 5 times a day when it is this hot in order to catch them at the right time. An update on our Howard Lake field continues to see a field ripe for blooming in another week. The winners here are the red rock garden peonies that will be available in 2011, followed by the same varieties listed above. For our friends in Zone 2, hang in there! Happy gardening!
05/20/2010 - PEONY FIELD TOUR CORRECTION
Please note our June field tour is on Saturday, June 5th from 9 am to 5 PM. We will not be open on June 4th. Thank you!
05/19/2010 - PEONY FIELD TOURS
Please note that we have also added Saturday, June 4th from 9 am to 5 PM for those of you who may be traveling over the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend. Also, we did a point-to-point Google directions on our address and it came up wrong. Please use MapQuest instead as they have the correct location. In any case, give us a call at 763.350.2051 or email for additional directions. For those of you who are coming from the east, please be patient when you are going through the hwy 12 detour in Maple Plain. This should be the last summer of detours on hwy 12 coming west. Some points of interest on the way from the east are Peterson Produce located about 2 miles east of Delano on the north side of hwy 12, for eats we LOVE Sunni's Grill in downtown Howard Lake and Cattail Corner garden center just as you are entering Howard Lake. We use Cattail Corner for most of our bedding and perennial plants. Can you now believe our summer like weather...in May? With temps in the mid-80's this weekend, the cut flower team is rearing to go. They should start cutting in our Delano field on Friday. Our Howard Lake field is still being stubborn due to its micro climate, but our guess is prime blooms during our tours. Happy gardening!
05/17/2010 - PEONY FIELD TOURS!
MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR MAY 28, 29 AND 31 FROM 9 AM TO 5 PM! This is the official notice for Swenson Gardens first annual peony field tour in Howard Lake, MN. Please note, WE WILL NOT BE OPEN ON SUNDAY, MAY 30th. This is our day rest for worship, family and a much needed nap. However, we are so looking forward to seeing you our here. The address is 10958 70th Street SW, Howard Lake, MN 55349. Please use the County Road 5 access to 70th Street SW. 70th Street SW is approximately 1 mile south of hwy 12 and County Road 5 is about halfway between Howard Lake and Cokato. The tours will be help rain or shine however if severe weather, please contact us at 763.350.2051 for more details. Parking is about an 1/8 of a mile from the field and a public restroom will be available. The kids are selling refreshments, snacks and PEONY CUT FLOWERS! We will be selling cut flowers subject to availability the day of the tour. Since this is a working farm, you are welcome to tour our newly landscaped gardens around our home but our animals are off limits due to the electric fences and risk of injury. Since this is our first ever peony field tour in Howard Lake, you will be viewing a rather new field in peony years. Most of our blooming plants are from 2 and 3 year old peonies. As you know, this field will only get better for viewing as they get older. Now some more exciting news, for those of you who will be attending, we will be offering some added discounts for making the drive out here. Since we do not sell potted peonies, you can place your orders that day for delivery or pick up this fall. Some of the varieties listed on our website may not be located in this field and/or in bloom this year. Bring your camera's and some nicer weather than the field tour we had last year in Delano! PLEASE! Last year was way too cold for us! Please call or email us if you have any more questions or need better directions. Happy gardening!
05/12/2010 - Peony field jottings
Rain, rain go away! Please come back another...month? Walking in any of our fields right now is a loosing battle. Thankfully when all of you come out to our Howard Lake peony field tours, we KNOW that you will help us catch up with weeding! Right? No dates to post yet as the hard frost last Saturday night and temps still in the low 40's at night, have brought the field to a hault. We did notice some bloom damage to our very early varieties but those that are still in the bud stage and 1/2 high stems are just fine. That is the risk we take with a late frost on the very early ones. We are extremely happy with the newspaper roll and chopped up corn stalks mulch between the rows of last falls new plantings. Weeds still sneak up on the edges, but overall very satisfied. Trust all of you are enduring this strange spring! Happy gardening!
05/07/2010 - Peony Field Jottings
Welcome to winter...again here in Minnesota! Snow flurries in the air and some measureable accumilation by tomorrow morning. I'm getting too old to say what is going on with our weather? This is another first for us as our Delano field is starting to show color with the very early varieties. Here in Howard Lake, where our field tours will be, I'm guessing we're still two the three weeks out. Will let you know more once we get through this cold snap. For those of you who have called and emailed us regarding the snow and upcoming frost, do not worry about covering your peonies. They are good to three nights of 19 degree weather so the are fine. I think we have a harder time with this cooler weather than they do. I forgot to wish you all a Happy Arbor Day last week. To celebrate for you just in case you did not get a chance to plant a tree, we planted an assortment of 900 conifers, maple trees, pussy willow trees, red dosier dogwood, flame willows and american cranberry bushes. Can't wait to show you what we are doing out here. Becky gave me free run of the Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program 'WHIP' with the USDA and Wright County Soil and Water Conservation Dept. So, I kind've went crazy with improving our habitat and windrows to help siphon some of the chemical runoff from neighboring farms. We also have the priviledge of being the first program within WHIP here in Wright County, MN to also implement pollinators to hopefully help the diminishing honey bees. Yes we are planting 1.25 acres of pollinators/wild flowers to the north of our peony field and 7 acres of native prairie grass to the south of our peony field. In three years this will be an amazing frame around our peony field. Also through in building a custom 11 x 15 cooler to extend our peony cut flower business into August has left me/us with absolutely no extra time...except tonight! Thank the good Lord for all this moisture as we cannot get in the fields...bummer, but we need a break! Happy gardening!
04/22/2010 - HAPPY EARTH DAY!
As we take a moment to reflect, we wish you and yours a Happy Earth Day! May we all be thankful for this wonderful earth that our Creator has allowed us to use. Please take heart this season to try gardening the natural way! We all are better off in the long run without chemicals! Thank you for supporting a chemical free gardening experience!

Not only has spring sprung, but thinking early summer is upon us. Trying to finish our spring maintenance before having to start in the fields is now on hold. I have never experienced a spring like this before! In talking with some of our neighboring crop farmers, they haven't either. Normally when peonies begin to show growth above ground, we estimate bloom in 45 to 60 days. This year we went from first growth last week to now buds appearing on the early varieties. That's almost 18 to 24 inches of growth in 1 week. Unbelieveable! No we are not posting field tours yet as I still think we could face a May like we did last year. For us here anyways, it was 60's and 70's in April and 40's and 50's in May. So, lets all be patient as we countdown to our field tours. Speaking of field tours, we're hearing from some of you in USDA 7 and 8a with blooms? You are so lucky to enjoy your blooms this early. Us in the cold country kind've go crazy this time of year having to wait and wait! Reviewing our 4/12/10 post, can you believe that night it rained and rained on our fields? I trust that those of you in similar conditions also received your much needed moisture. Thank you Lord! AGAIN! Things are also expanding 'on the farm'. This past weekend Britta, Luke, Danny and I finished our new walk in cooler. Becky was so surprised when she returned home from a weekend away that it is soo big! Say 11 x 15! This will help their cut flower business as blooms should now be available for 2 to 3 months after they are stored. Since this is our test year, we can't guaranty that just yet as we would like to work the bugs out of the process first. Check back again and will update our field tours in the near future...we just hope that we can finish our other spring chores. Happy gardening!
04/12/2010 - Peony Field Jottings
Welcome spring! The tulips are at half mast and awaiting some much needed rain here on the farm. For those of you, like us here, the soil moisture level is dangerously low. Thus we are encouraging like site locations to slowly pour about 2 gallons of water around your FIRST year only plants now IF YOU HAVE NOT RECEIVED ANY RAINFALL SINCE THE SNOW MELT! DO NOT WATER your first year plants again this year unless it is posted on our blog and/or give us a call at 763.350.2051 in case you have any questions. Your peonies that are in their second and above growing season are not as concerning as first year plants. Now, this only applies to those of us in USDA growing zones 2 to 4. Those of you in 5 and above already know what you should be doing. Here in our growing zone, we did not have any snowfall in March and so far April is still dry. Otherwise our Delano field is seeing early varieties growth at about 1' and here in Howard Lake about 6 inches. We do hope and pray that rain will give all plants, trees and lawns a much needed soaking soon. Seems like all our possibility of rain either goes south or north of us here in central Minnesota. Be patient my gardening friends!
03/22/2010 - Time to remove mulch!
YES! Spring has sprung here in USDA Zone 4! Tulips are starting to see daylight so now is the time to start removing your 1st year peonies mulch. We usually remove 1/2 of the mulch now and in 7 days we remove the balance of the mulch. Make sure to remove all of the mulch away from the center of your hole. About a 2' circle of bare ground is a good measure. We need your site location to be free of any mulch in order for your site to dry out. For our friends in the NE, I would try to remove even more mulch based on your overwhelming moisture over the past few weeks. It is key for any of you who have had significant moisture to try and dry out your site location as quickly as possible. The longer the roots sit in soggy soil, unfortunately, our nemiss, rotting out roots, may occur. I would wait at least 2 to 3 weeks before bringing back in your mulch to the 2' diameter site location. Also, we are always looking for ways to reduce those pesky weeds organically. Since Becky and Luke tried this last year in our vegetable garden, we are going to try this in a test area of our Howard Lake field. Contact your local newspaper publications and ask them if you can buy end of the roll newspaper stock. If you lay down about 4 layers of it, it does a fine job of deterring week growth for a couple of years. By that time, most weeds and weed seeds are finally dead and then the newspaper stock will decompose. They read about this in a chemical free vegetable garden article. That of course is right up our alley when it comes to growing our peonies without any chemicals. Have fun this spring as we usher in another year of our Creator's garden enjoyment! Happy gardening!
03/04/2010 - Minnesota Peony Society Presentation
Thanks again to all our Minnesota peony enthusiasts who came out last Saturday to see and hear our presentation on growing peonies the natural way. It sure was nice to talk peonies! Now we just have to wait to see, smell and touch our peonies! Hang in there USDA zones 2 to 6! This is the time of year we miss not living in USDA zones 7 & 8a. Please, please email us some pictures of your peonies so we can enjoy and dream about our spring coming up here! We also have a question for all of you who use Facebook, do you think we should add Swenson Gardens Facebook account? Please email us at info@swensongardens.com and let us know what you think. Our problem with more Facebook is the fact that we don't have extra time to manage it properly now and especially when we are in the fields. Happy gardening!
02/27/2010 - 5% Discount for cash orders!
Please note that this discount is available for mail order only and is not available on our 'Specials'. Go to 'How to order' page and print off the 'order form' for all regular priced peonies. You can deduct the 5% off your product total and then mail it in with your personal check, money order or cashiers check. This is only available for mail order and not on our online store. Just another option for helping both of us! Happy gardening!
02/25/2010 - 2010 SWENSON GARDENS IS OFFICIALLY OPEN!
Welcome to our 2010 online garden! We hope you enjoy your visit. A few changes to our site, many new varieties and a promise that we will continue to provide our customers with outstanding peonies that are organically grown! Yes these are trying financial times and we hope that our 'specials' page will help both of us. As you may know, our labor and growing costs have gone up, but rest assured that our chemical free growing has not changed. It would be easy and less expensive for us to switch and grow peonies like most of the other growers; however, we are different. Being good stewards of the earth is paramount to our future success. Thus we are asking you to consider purchasing your next generational peonies from us! We will do our best to make sure your order is correct and of the highest quality, field grown stock that will generate your continued passion for peonies. Please let us know via email or call us at 763.350.2051 for any additional questions. Also, as we are trying to make some of our varieties more affordable in this economy, check back often to see what our 'specials' are. We know you won't be dissappointed as these are of the same stock and quality as our normal orders. Yes you may find some of our pricing higher than other suppliers, but be assured that we do not sell any tissue cultured plants. If you haven't purchased from us before, now is the time to experience an organically raised Swenson Gardens peony! Happy gardening!
02/22/2010 - 2010 Website coming soon!
I know its been a long winter for most of us! Our webmaster is almost done with the updates for this year. Hang in there as we too are anxious for you to see it! 152 varieties will be available this year including 25 intersectional hybrid peonies. Also, as an added bonus, wait till you see our 'Specials' page. Happy gardening!
02/01/2010 - Minnesota Peony Society Presentation
On Saturday, Feb 27th you are invited to attend our presentation on 'Growing peonies the natural way'. You can check out more details at www.mnpeony.org. We hope to see you there and do consider joining the Minnesota Peony Society. Also, we are getting closer to launching our 2010 website. Now that I'm seeing peonies in my sleep, I/we can't wait for you to see our updates. Hang in there as we're still estimating early March. Happy winter waiting for spring gardening!
01/16/2010 - HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Thoughts of spring continue to cloud my mind! Especially today as I'm cropping 1000+ pictures to come up with the updates to our 2010 website. Like you, I am very anxious to launch our new website. We are hoping to launch in early March. Will update more details once we get closer! Trust you and yours had a blessed Christmas and a safe and healthy New Year!
12/04/2009 - Peony field jottings...
Hello gardening friends. Its been a long time since we've shared what is really going on here at Swenson Gardens. We hope that your 2009 gardening season was a success and we're already looking forward to the 2010 gardening season. This has been a very trying fall for us due to the weather, equipment breakdowns and now single digit temps. The September digs beset us with 85 to 90 degree temps. This is hard on our digging and dividing crew but somehow our washing team loved it. You can always find something to be thankful for our crew of excellent workers. The October dig was a different story, the digging and dividing crew loved the 35 to 40 degree weather but go figure, the washing team did not. All in all we were satisfied with the vigor of our roots and it was nice to see how healthy they looked once we dug them up. With all the rain we had in October, planting our line outs tested our patience. Just as the fields were drying up, here comes the rain. Funning when we were praying for rain back in July and August it didn't come, but then the Heaven's opened up in October. Finally though we did get the 1,600+ new plants in the ground and the rains still came after they were put to bed. We cut our fields down in early November with hopes that the ground would freeze soon so we could mulch the first year plants. Well we waited and waited and finally today the ground is frozen. We hope to be mulching tomorrow if Keith can get our main tractor fixed. Something with the hydraulic couplers that is spewing oil all over the place. He is so proud of his new (used) John Deere 16a flail chopper. With all the farms around us, he uses that to chop up corn stalks and cover all the rows. Hopefully he can get it fixed tomorrow morning before the crew arrives. For those of you in USDA zones 2 to 4, now is the time to mulch only your first year plants. This is to prevent heaving of the roots next spring when it thaws and re-freezes. Those of you in zones 5 and up, lucky you! We can remember a few years ago we were mulching the weekend before Christmas. Once the mulching is done we can then start on inside work getting our new website to launch in early 2010. Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving Holiday and if you need to burn off any extra calories, let us know and we'll put you to work outside helping us mulch. Happy gardening and by all means keep walking!
11/25/2009 - Happy Thanksgiving!
Wishing you and your family a very blessed Thanksgiving!
10/20/2009 - Peony field jottings...
Thank you again for allowing us to provide many of our returning gardeners and new gardeners our peonies. Looking back over the last few weeks has truly tested our patience with the weather conditions. We always are praying for windows to do this or that with our plants, but two measureable snowfalls during our third dig and planting is ridiculous! Yes we were planting in snow as the window for planting was closing for us. In all my/our years of growing peonies, this was a first. Thankfully the soil was still warm so the snow melted in a day, but come on...this was truly amazing. How could we go from 85 degrees during our first dig to 30 degrees and snow for the third dig? Growing peonies here in Minnesota makes me wonder how in the world those potted peonies grown in climate controlled greenhouses ever make it in the real world! Be assured that our roots have seen it all and do quite nicely in any USDA growing zone. This fall we were blessed with an amazing digging, dividing, washing and packing crew. Yes Becky, Britta and Luke were hard workers, but we want to thank our team of Kari, Rick, Dan and Danny for their untold hours of hard work. We love you guys and I hope hour customers love them as well because propagating organic peonies is not an easy task. We all take extra steps in order to provide the best roots possible for our customers. Also for other weed crew members, Hannah, Amy, Andrew, Jessie and Chase, thank you for keeping those pesky weeds away from our peonies. We have a few more peonies to line out, cut down the foliage and mulch our first year plants and then...hibernation for all! If you haven't cut down your foliage, please consider doing it now. All the plants are sleeping and yes it is time to put them to bed for the winter. Dreams of spring are popping up in my mind, but first things first. Also, if you would like to email us for additional information or changes you would like to see for our 2010 website, let us know and we will see what we can do. Happy gardening and yes keep walking!
09/14/2009 - Last minute orders
This is a friendly reminder that our online store will be closing this Friday, September 18th at 5 PM. No additional orders will be accepted for the 2009 season. We are starting to dig our Zone 5 & 6 orders this week followed by Zone 7 & 8 coastal in a couple of weeks. If you were planning on ordering this year, now is the time to do it! Happy gardening and keep walking!
09/11/2009 - Saturday, September 12th from 9 am to 5 PM
The Swenson Gardens Peony Garage Sale just increased numbers of varieties that will be available at greatly reduced prices! Keith said, 'sell all the leftovers and line-outs as I don't want to plant them!' Must be an age thing with him as he seems to be getting crankier now that he's over 50. Google or Mapquest our address at 10958 70th Street SW, Howard Lake, MN 55349 or you can call us at 763.350.2051. If you are coming from the east, sorry about the road construction in Maple Plain and Delano. What a mess so you may want to add 10 or 15 minutes more to your drive. Once you get to Delano, you can stay on County Road 30 all the way to County Road 6. Go north on 6 and just as you enter Howard Lake, take the first gravel road left/west which is 70th Street SW to our farm. A couple of must stops if coming from the east are; Peterson Produce (1 1/2 east of Delano) which features local field to table vegetables, the winery about 4 miles west of Delano, Fall Harvest Apple Orchard about 5 miles west of Delano, Sunni's a wonderful restaurant in Howard Lake and Cattail Corner in Howard Lake which has some amazing perennials in their garden center. Looking forward to seeing you on Saturday, September 12th from 9 am to 5 PM.
09/07/2009 - Peony field jottings...
We are done with Zones 2 to 4 digging, dividing and shipping out on Tuesday, September 8th (see what I mean from previous post about our anniversary!) You should receive your orders by the end of the week unless you specified other shipping arrangements. We do try to accommodate special shipments, i.e. gifts, in memory of and hold to a later date, but for the most part, we like to keep our shipments at a minimum in order to provide the freshest roots. Our first annual garage peony sale last Saturday was a huge blessing to all who came out. So much so that we are having our last one of the season this Saturday, September 12th from 9 am to 5 PM. Customers who did not pick up their orders on the 5th are encouraged to contact us for alternative pick up dates or pick them up this Saturday, September 12th from 9 am to 5 PM. Also, anyone who wants to bring their 3+ year old peonies in to divide may do so this Saturday. Make sure they are washed and foliage removed. I will not be available for dividing from 9:30 to 11 am as we have a garden club that already reserved that time. Moving on to Zones 5 & 6, our digging should begin in a couple of weeks. Will inform more details as we get closer. If any of your foliage has turned brown due to the drought conditions, okay to cut them about 2 to 4 inches above ground level and dispose as noted in our Peony Care section. If your foliage is still green, okay to leave on plants until the first hard frost or remove on November 1st. For our friends in Zones 7 and 8 coastal, I would suggest to stop any watering immediately and cut off your foliage no later than October 1st. If your foliage is already brown, okay to cut off foliage now about 2 to 4 inches above ground level. Will inform more about your shipping schedule in mid October. This reminds me for all Zones, if any of your foliage is brown, cut off immediatels as described above. I know in our fields, some of the varieties already are brown due to the drought conditions. Again this is the amazing plant habitate of peonies as they know when to go dormant based on the moisture content of the soil. They will come up fine next year. You see this allot with first year plants as they use up all their stored energy faster in a low moisture year. Yes I know this is Labor Day, but we did get all the Zone 2 to 4 orders picked and packed today so Becky and I could enjoy our 19th wedding anniversary tomorrow. Happy Labor Day, happy gardening and keep walking!
09/01/2009 - Saturday, September 5th from 9 am to 5 PM
I forgot to mention in my last post that this Saturday, 9/5 from 9 am to 5 PM we will have leftover roots available for sale and pick up here in Howard Lake. Our address again is 10958 70th Street SW, Howard Lake, MN 55349. Bring your checkbook or cash as we will not be able to process via credit cards. The leftover roots are available at a discount and prices will be noted on the variety tags. No preselling or saving of roots as it is first come first serve basis. See you Saturday for some unbelieveable savings!
09/01/2009 - Let the dividing begin!
All the roots are dug and now awaiting surgery! If you get a chance to stop by on Saturday, 9/5, you will also get a chance to meet Kari who is helping me divide. She and I are very competitive when it comes to dividing peony roots as we see who can get the nicest divide with the most eyes per division. Yes we are still friends after she beat me with the first herbaceous divides yesterday. She is doing a great job and hopefully I can train her this year for dividing intersectional roots. Intersectionals are by far the most difficult peony root to divide. Sometimes it can take up to an hour to divide one root. Thankfully I was trained by Roger Anderson so he gave me a few tips over the years. Kari has been dividing for 6-years now and we are so thankful to have her with us. I was pleasantly surprised when digging the peonies to find the eyes fully developed in most of the varieties. The recent rains were a Godsend to the roots. Now to get back to surgery and get the roots divided. Happy gardening and keep walking!
08/26/2009 - Let the digging begin!
This weekend we are starting to dig for our USDA zones 2 to 4 customers. With all the rain we have had lately, we can't wait to see the size of the roots. We are so thankful for the much needed rain at just the right time during the peonies growth cycle. I still can't figure out why I get so worried about these plants as the good Lord knows what they need. Oh well, some year I will learn! IF all goes well with the weather, we should be ready for shipping on September 4th or 8th. Becky is such a trooper as our anniversary is on the 8th and every year as of late we have spent it digging, washing, dividing, packing and/or shipping roots. Don't worry, if we don't celebrate it on the 8th, I do make up for it! For our local customers who will pick up their orders on September 5th or 12th, go to Google or Mapquest and type in our address for directions. It is 10958 70th Street SW, Howard Lake, MN 55349. The time is 9 am to 5 PM. Also, we have a couple of surprises planned for those days. One, if your have peony roots that you would like divided, please bring them over and we would be honored to give you hands-on dividing lessons. Make sure your roots are washed and foliage removed. We will supply the tools. Secondly, after our dig, we usually have extra retail and wholesale/line-out roots left over. Some of these are available at greatly reduced prices, so come early in the day and pick-up some must have roots. Please do not call or email us for availability as this is a very busy time for us. We do apologize in advance for not returning phone calls and emails in a timely manner, but things will slow down in a week or so before we start back up again for our second and third dig. Again a friendly reminder for our USDA zones 7 and coastal 8's, stop watering on Labor Day to encourage dormancy with your peonies. Happy gardening and keep walking!
08/18/2009 - Let the fun begin!
Greetings friends! It has been too long since our last post. Some of our vacation was cut short due to Keith's mom who took a turn for the worst but we are very thankful she is now recovering again. Keith also spent last week recovering from a nasty virus due to the stress and lack of sleep with all his parent's stuff going on. We are hoping to get him recovered so he can start the digging and dividing process that is soon upon us. Make sure to get your last minute orders in before our deadlines. Based on your growing zones, the last day's to order are noted on our 'How to order' page. The roots should be nice and plump from our recent rains. Hope your summer has been good and all your plants are doing well. Happy gardening!
07/30/2009 - VACATION!
We will be on vacation from July 31st to August 10th with no access to voicemail and emails. Look forward to speaking with you when we return. Thanks!
07/28/2009 - Peony field jottings...
It is hard to believe that our gardening friends in Zone 2 are at the end of their bloom times. This has to be one of the latest bloom time years that I recall. For those of us in Zones 3 and 4, it is okay to snip off your spent blooms. Zones 5 to coastal 8 should have already done that (if you so choose to do so). For those of you who are awaiting your roots, you may want to ready your site location now as noted on our 'FAQ' page. We have extended our 'Moving Sale' so do take a peak at some of the varieties we have on sale. Knowing how we are all trying to cut back with this economy, we decided to offer these prices to try and help out. Happy gardening and keep walking!
07/24/2009 - Peony field jottings...
After being gone for a week and now trying to catch up with the weeds, we've been remiss in posting. Unfortunately the weeds did not go on vacation. With the much needed rain, they and the peonies are doing extremely well. The below normal temps have certainly helped the peonies with the lack of moisture. Thankfully the good Lord knows better than us when they need a drink. Other than day lilies, I do not know of any other plant that is so drought resistant once they are established. We were hoping to get the Howard Lake field caught up last night, but our two calves decided to leave the barn. Britta was out riding Daisy, her western quarter horse so they had fun cutting them back into the barn after Luke and I chased the one that ended up running a couple of miles down the road. I thought it was over but then our chocolate lab, Brownie, decided to meet a skunk for her first time. Needless to say the skunk was not the friendly type. IF you ever have a pet graced with a'de'skunk, try this formula, it really works: 1 qt hydrogin peroxide, 1/2 cup baking soda and 1 tsp Dawn liquid soap. Make sure to keep it away from your pets eyes, nose and mouth. Rinse and apply again. She is now skunk free and hopefully has learned her lesson. We also had the pleasure of removing wild parsnip from our 5 acres of wildlife habitat. If you've ever been in contact with that noxious weed, YIKES! Here in Wright County, MN, this weed is rampant. We pulled most of them out and brush hogged the rest. I hope we can stay ahead of them as they truly will take over all native grasses and flowers. Have a great weekend, happy gardening and keep walking!
07/10/2009 - On Vacation!
We will be on vacation from July 11th to July 19th. Happy gardening and keep walking!
07/06/2009 - Peony field jottings...
Trust you all had a safe and happy 4th of July weekend. We did have some fun as a family at the Delano, MN 4th of July parade. It is the oldest and longest parade in Minnesota. Thankfully the 'candy' did wonders for our 'weed crew' as this hotter than normal June and early July has really taken a toll on all of us. The extra sugar helps for awhile but then the CRASH! Both of the fields are almost in shape for a much needed vacation next week. The last blooming plants in the Delano field are...Bartzella and Julia Rose. I was in awe when they appeared on July 2nd. So for us in our growing zone, we had color from Mother's day to this past weekend. This is why we try to encourage our customers to plant early to late varieties so you can enjoy the colors longer. On the weed front, we have weeds appearing that usually appear in August. Hopefully they will all come at once so we can get caught up. This is a hard time of the year for us to stay focused on organic growing of our plants. It would be so easy to spray or use some pre-emergents, but those thoughts too shall pass as we have committed to being chemical free growers even though our labor costs are higher than normal this year. Last week we had ten people on our weed crew for the Delano field so you do the math. Very expensive but totally worth it as this truly sets us apart from the majority of peony growers out there! Happy gardening and keep walking...and hand weeding!
06/22/2009 - Peony field jottings...
We almost cried today out in the fields as last night's thunder storm almost wiped out what remaining very late blooms we had. Couple that with the 94 degree temperature outside and the bloom time is all but done for 2009. The winner of the latest blooms to open are 'Ruth Cobb' and 'Nancy Nora'. Candy Stripe is still putting up a few, but he is past his prime! With a last name of 'Swenson', our time in the field is limited when the temps go above 72 degrees. However, this last Saturday was the exception at 84 degrees. Eleven straight hours of roto-tilling did get the best of us 'men and boys'. Dad wanted to get the field done before Father's Day and by golly he did. Needless to say he spent Father's Day recovering with heat exhaustion. Must be the pale skin and balding head that heated him up! Thankfully he is doing better today and the rest of us are inside enjoying the a/c. Be careful gardeners when you are exposed to heat! Drink plenty of water and limit your mid-day activities outside. Now if I only could get my husband to do that! Oh well...it is what it is! Happy gardening and keep walking!
06/22/2009 - St Cloud Flower and Garden Club Presentation
For our gardening friends in St Cloud, MN, I hope you can attend my presentation tonight at the St Cloud Public Library at 7 PM.
06/17/2009 - Peony field jottings...
A friendly reminder for our Minnesota customers who have not ordered yet,on July 1st the sales tax will go up to 6.875%. Might mean another peony or two savings?! The Delano field has yet to show some of the very late varieties. Will let you know who that will be in a week or so. Bartzella is still going and going and going. On week three with blooms and may get another week with this rain. Did we tell you that the heavens opened up? We are so thankful! Becky, Britta and Luke had a fun morning doing a photo shoot for another magazine article coming out next spring. It is a blast to share our organic growing techniques with various publications. From a previous post about emergency watering for USDA growing zones 2 to 4, please read carefully, DO NOT WATER ANYMORE if you've had this 2 to 4 inch rain over the past 10-days. The peonies are nice and happy now! For those of you in USDA zones 5 to 8 coastal, keep doing what our peony care tips and FAQ page suggests. Happy gardening and keep walking!
06/15/2009 - Minnesota Peony Society Show Results
What a fabulous time we had at MPS peony show this past weekend. Not to brag about our kids, (however being their parents) we are so proud of them. They certainly have an eye for award winning blooms. Here are the list of their winners. Blue ribbons and Best Speciman of Section for 1-bloom; Cora Louise, Chinook and White Ivory. Blue ribbons for 1-bloom; Coral Charm, Pink Derby, Ruth Elizabeth and Constance Spry. Blue ribbons for 3-blooms; The Fawn, Chinook, Lovely Rose and Neon. Red ribbons for 1-bloom; Candy Stripe, The Fawn, Pink Derby, Lovely Rose, Nancy Nora, Cytherea, Neon, Eliza Lundy, Lemon Dream and Morning Lilac. Red ribbons for 3-blooms; Ivory Victory, Ruth Elizabeth, Eliza Lundy, Joker and Coral Supreme. White ribbons for 1-bloom; Candy Stripe, Ivory Victory, Best Man, Nancy Nora, Red Charm, Cytherea, Bartzella and Unique. White ribbon for 3-blooms; White Ivory. It was also fun to see some of our past customers winning ribbons as well. If you are not part of a peony society in your area, I would encourage you to join up. It is a blast to talk with other gardeners who also have a passion for growing and showing peonies. Happy gardening and keep walking!
06/09/2009 - Fertilizing established peonies
For those of you who have established peonies that are at lease 3-years old and did not plant them similar to our planting tips on our 'Peony Care' page, now is the time to fertilize. If you did plant peonies from us and followed our planting tips, please read this carefully, YOU DO NOT NEED TO RE-FERTILIZE YOUR PLANTS! You have enough nutrients in your site for generations. This is what I would suggest for organic fertilizers; (2) cups of 'Milorganite' OR (1) cup of bone meal. Fertilizing peonies are similar to shrubs and trees. They take in nutrients from the drip line. Based on how wide your plants are, scratch the fertilizer into the soil at the farthest point where your foliage ends. It may take awhile to leach down into the soil so be patient. This is why we are using 'Milorganite' more as the nutrients do not break down as fast as bone meal will. Since we are organic growers, I wouldn't have any idea on chemical fertilizers as we've never, nor will we ever, use those on our plants. By fertilizing now, you are catching the new growth period of your plants. Happy gardening and keep walking!
06/08/2009 - Peony field jottings...
The rains came down...thank you, thank you and more thank you's! 1 1/2 inches from Saturday to Monday morning. What a soaker! With the cooler temps, this will work marvelously! The cooler temps have also slowed down the bloom. The cut crew was out in force today and had expected to cut some 'lates' but they are not ready yet. However, our cut flower wholesaler went nuts today when they brought in 'The Fawn' and 'Candy Stripe'. Those are marvelous 'cuts' with extended vase and cooler life. I should mention that some of his favorite cuts from us are; Bartzella, Hillary, Canary Brilliants, Prairie Charm, Cora Louise and First Arrival for intersectionals and for gardens, Coral Sunset, Coral Charm, Coral Supreme, Abalone Pearl, The Mighty Mo, Red Charm and Red Grace to name a few. The hot color for our wedding designers are white, egg plant and hot pink. The cut crew has about a 7 to 10 days left in the field and then...let the weeding begin. Just a friendly reminder that we will not be having anymore field tours this year. Unfortunately you will have to wait until 2010 for any hands-on viewing. In the mean time, do check out our 'How to order' page if you are a new customer. Also, for our local customers who are picking up their orders on September 5th or September 12th, I will be giving demonstrations between 9 am and 5 PM on how to divide peonies. Bring any of your own peonies to Howard Lake and I/we would love to show you how to divide. Also, this weekend is the Minnesota Peony Society's show at the Bachman's in Bloomington. Stop by to find out more about the MPS and to view these amazing blooms. We hope to be able to show, but the way our blooms have gone this year, not sure what we will have left. Happy gardening and keep walking!
06/06/2009 - Delano peony field jottings
Thank you to all the gardeners that braved the 49 degree temperature, rain (PTL) and high NE winds today. You are the best and/or NUTS! We gardeners LOVE our peonies...right?! Seriously, I hope this field brought you some joy and admiration towards these amazing plants. It was fun to talk with you and for those of you with the warm hands...THANK YOU! It was cold but well worth it. For those of you who visited us from Chicago and Sommerset, trust you had a safe drive home. Happy gardening!
06/05/2009 - DELANO PEONY FIELD TOUR, 10 AM TO 3 PM ON SATURDAY, JUNE 6th
Okay, so who prayed for rain on our Delano peony field tour day? Last check was 90% chance between 10 am and 4 pm. COME RAIN OR SHINE, WE WILL STILL BE THERE! HOWEVER, IF SEVERE WEATHER, PLEASE USE YOUR BEST JUDGEMENT! This is the only day this year that we are doing a field tour so hopefully we'll still get in some dry periods so you can see the peak bloom time. Our phone numbers again are 763.350.2051 or 612.670.1373. Also, you may want to come prepared with boots and raingear IF the rain finally reaches us.
06/02/2009 - USDA Growing Zones 2, 3 and 4 Revision
USDA GROWING ZONES 2, 3 AND 4 - Thank you for your emails regarding our east central Minnesota drought. I need to clarify hand watering for those of you who choose to do that per my previous post. If you do, only hand water your 1 and 2 year old plants. If your plants are 3-years old or older, I would not suggest watering them as they are already established.
06/01/2009 - USDA Growing Zones 2, 3 and 4 Peony Updates
USDA GROWING ZONES 2, 3 AND 4 - Hang in there zones 2 and 3a! Your bloom times are soon to begin. For the rest of us, isn't this a blast! We can't wait to get in the fields to see who is showing. Yesterday 'Bartzella', 'Garden Treasure' and 'Lemon Dream' showed up as well as 'Etched Salmon'. This Saturday for our field tour should be about peak for the mid bloomers. The earlies are almost done and the mids are my favorite time of the season. Hope you too are enjoying the spectacle of color! Now, I am concerned though about our drought conditions here in east central Minnesota. You too may also be in similar conditions; however, some of you have received normal rainfall so please disregard the following sentence. Please read carefully, until we receive some normal rainfall, I WOULD CONSIDER HAND WATERING YOUR PEONIES. Normal rainfall this time of year is 1" so that equates to a 1/2 gallon per plant of hand watering. If you choose to do this, I would give each plant 1/2 gallon of water every 10 to 14 days until we have a normal rainfall or we get to August 1st. If we have to hand water to August 1st, DO NOT WATER ANYMORE AFTER AUGUST 1ST! The key for us is to make sure the soil around the roots dries out before hand watering again. IF the sub-soil remains wet around the roots, this could kill your peony so please be very, very careful if you choose to hand water! Peonies need water about four key times during their growing season; 1) when the stems first show in the spring (okay on this one as we received rainfall), 2) during the bloom times (haven't yet and this is concerning me), 3) the most critical time is 2 to 3 weeks after the last bloom is spent (don't know yet but this is when the peony is developing new eyes and expanded root growth for next year's plant) and 4) when the foliage starts to turn brown (again we don't know yet but this is when the small white feeder roots take their last sip of water in order to keep them hydrated during the long winter months). In conclusion, IF YOU'VE HAD NORMAL RAINFALL DO NOT WATER! IF YOU HAVEN'T HAD NORMAL RAINFALL YOU MAY WANT TO CAREFULLY HAND WATER YOUR PLANTS ONCE EVERY 10 TO 14 DAYS UNTIL WE RECEIVE NORMAL RAINFALL OR REACH AUGUST 1ST. If you have any addtional questions, please email us. Enjoy, walk and think...RAIN!
06/01/2009 - USDA Growing Zones 5 and 6 Peony Updates
USDA GROWING ZONES 5 AND 6 - Hello fellow gardeners! This time of the year has to be a blast for you! You must be at your peak bloom time or shortly there after. I want to caution you about now cutting off ALL of your blooms! Remember the 1/3 rule; at 3-years of age okay to cut 1/3 of the blooms (saving 2/3 of the blooms on the plants) and at 5-years of age okay to cut 2/3 of the blooms (saving 1/3 of the blooms on the plants). We want to keep your plants looking healthy and expanding in size by retaining as much of the plants foliage and stems for the continuation of the cycle of growth. It is okay to cut off the spent blooms about 2 to 3 weeks after they are done blooming. This will help to tidy up the plant and for those of you who are into landscape quality bushes, enjoy its foliage as we enter into summer. Though we do not suggest watering your plants during the summer, please note that some of your locations are or may be in a drought period this season. The rule thumb is 1 to 2 inches of rainfall/water each week up until Labor Day. Please, please do not water your peonies if they are looking healthy and are not showing signs of stress. The worst thing you can do for your peonies is to over water them and to not allow the sub soil to dry out around their roots. IF the sub soil moisture level remains damp and/or wet, this may destroy your beautiful plants. Just be careful with the watering can and hose. As long as you have normal weather patterns, I would not suggest watering them. Peonies are smarter than us and they know what to do in overly dry conditions. Have a wonderful peony season!
06/01/2009 - USDA Growing Zone 7 and Coastal 8 Peony Updates
USDA GROWING ZONES 7 AND COASTAL 8'S - I'm assuming that your blooms are nearing the end of the season. Make sure to review your growing and maintenance tips on our 'Peony Care' and 'FAQ' pages. We get many inquiries on what to do with the spent blooms. First of all, it is okay to snip off the spent blooms about 2 to 3 weeks after they are done blooming on the 2-year old or older plants. This is the start of your new eyes and root replenishment for next years blooms. Rule of thumb is 1 to 2 inches of rain/watering per week until Labor Day. Make sure that your sub-soil dries out between watering. DO NOT OVER WATER and stop watering on Labor Day as you want to force them into dormancy. We hope your 2009 bloom season was fun (and may still be fun) and looking forward to next years bloom. In the mean time, enjoy the next best part of the peonies and that is its foliage. Just a friendly reminder to PLEASE send us some pictures! We would love to share them on our website. Happy gardening!
06/01/2009 - DELANO FIELD TOUR SATURDAY JUNE 6TH
DIRECTIONS: Hitsman Lane is located about 2-miles east of Delano on the south side of highway 12. Hitsman Lane almost forms an 'L' on hwy 12 as it begins and ends on hwy 12. Once on Hitsman Lane, park on the east side of the turquose house and you will see yellow 'Swenson Gardens' signs where you can then walk about 150 yards south into the field. There are no facilities there as this truly is a growing field. We will be in the field from 10 am to 3 PM and make sure to bring your camera! If you need to call us for more specific directions, contact Becky at 763.350.2051 or Keith at 612.670.1373. See you on Saturday!
05/29/2009 - Peony field jottings...
Intersectionals are starting to show their colors. For those of you new to intersectionals, it is a continued bloom versus all at once. Since they (intersectionals) have primary and secondary buds, the primary buds are starting to bloom now and within a week or so, the secondary buds will start to bloom. The star of our field 'Bartzella', is not showing yet. Should start Sunday or Monday depending on weather. Intersectionals bloom over a 2 to 4 week period depending on conditions. With our drought conditions, it may be shorter this year. Good news...I felt a very small rain drop taking pictures tonight. We're hoping that the 40% chance of rain on Sunday PM turns into 100%! Our friends south of us in zones 5, 6 and 7 are hogging all the humidity and moisture so we're stuck in some very dry air. We've stopped all cultivating and roto-tilling as we want to maintain as much subsoil moisture as possible. Thankfully being on clay/loam soil, it does retain ground moisture better than a sandy/loam soil. Have a great evening, keep walking and happy gardening!
05/28/2009 - DELANO FIELD TOUR
The time is from 10 am to 3 PM on Saturday, June 6th. Brief directions now is 2-miles east of Delano just south of highway 12 off of Hitsman Lane. Again this is our main growing field so come prepared for the elements. (Bugs!) Will give you more specifics soon. Cut flowers are going crazy with the 80 degree temps today. The 'cut' crew went through 3 times today and they are still going at 6 PM tonight. With the drought conditions and high temps, peonies know what to do: Throw up a few blooms quickly and then recover until the much needed moisture arrives. I finally got to see 'White Emperor' in bloom which is a new intersectional/Itoh hybrid that we will offer next year. I was blown away with its fragrance, crystal clear white blooms and low statly foliage. Of course then I went to 'Centerpointe', 'Winterthur' and 'Salmon Beauty' and had to bring out my inhaler to breath again. This is so much fun and can't wait for you to see this field! I do have a beef with our USDA growing zones 6, 7 and coastal 8's friends, WHERE ARE YOUR PICTURES? Please email them to us so we can post on our 'Gallery' page. Email them to info@swensongardens.com and if you are computer savy, the pixel size is 810 wide by 375 high. Enjoy your evening, keep walking and happy gardening!
05/26/2009 - Peony field jottings...
A couple of weeks ago I posted that our Howard Lake field was so far behind our Delano field. So far behind that we were concerned that we had lost most of our plants. What our family does in any situation is pray. That night during our family prayer time we prayed that a miracle would take place with our plants. So the next day, Luke and I hand amended a few thousand plants. All I could think about was that God takes care of the lilies of the field. Would He then take care of the peonies in the field? When we got to the end of the first row we looked back and saw about 75% of the peonies 2 to 3 inches above the ground looking back at us! We finished another row and another and another and in each case the same thing happened! Joy and tears filled our hearts and mind. We just experienced the loving and powerful hand of our Creator! He knows we love our peonies and daily pray that they will be a blessing to all. We are so blessed! Speaking of blessed, the Delano field is now entering the early and early-to-mid bloom time. The standard by which all bloom times are established is now in bloom. The regal 'Red Charm' is receiving applause from his magnificant bloom and heavenly scent. Intersectionals are showing some color in their buds and 'Morning Lilac' is the winner of the first to show full color. I should have mentioned earlier that Becky, Britta and Luke are now taking orders for cut flowers. If you have a celebration, wedding, anniversary, graduations or just need a peony cut flower fix, call Becky at 763.350.2051 to order. Sorry but we do not ship cut flowers but you can make local arrangements to pick them up. Prices range from $3 to $5 per bloom depending on color. We cannot guarranty specific variety blooms. Have a wonderful time in your garden and please pray for rain! Thanks.
05/26/2009 - Another miracle...a field tour!
Mark JUNE 6th on your calendars! We are in the process of organizing a field tour...in DELANO! Yes Delano. Since we have been leasing this land, the land-owner has agreed to allow access to the field for fellow gardeners and customers. Stay tuned for additional information forthcoming in the next few days.
05/26/2009 - Miracles do happen!
Thank you for your prayers for my mom. I spent a few days with them this past weekend and was able to be there when she came home from the short term care facility. They both are doing well and are enjoying being a couple again. Thankfully her walking saved her life! In her mid-80's and walking 2 miles a day provided the strength to recover quickly. May 'walking' be part of our daily lives!
05/20/2009 - GARDEN CLUB FIELD TOURS
Keith just reminded me that any of the garden clubs who were scheduled to tour the field should call me, Becky at 763.350.2051 or email info@swensongardens.com for additional information. Thanks.
05/20/2009 - FIELD TOURS CANCELLED FOR 2009
We regret to cancel our field tours this year but we are in the midst of a family emergency. Many recent and future trips to visit Keith's parents in northern Wisconsin has left us with no choice. Though they are doing better, the follow-up caretaking is more important to us for this season of our family's life. This was unexpected but thank the good Lord they are still with us. We will try to keep posting when time is available. Thank you for your understanding and to some of you who know about this, thank you for your prayers and support. Happy gardening!
05/16/2009 - PEONY FIELD UPDATE
We had full intentions of posting our tour dates today; however, FROST is in our forecast for tonight! Not worried about our peonies as they will survive about 3 nights of 20 degree temps in the spring before any foliage and bud damage. I'm more worried about us and you as we are all anxious for this field to wake up. As I mentioned in my previous post, the Delano field is showing color on the very early varieties like 'Nova', 'milko' (species variety), 'Starlight' and 'Rose Noble'. With today's cloudy morning, I can't wait to get out there and take some more photos. Stay tuned to our 'blog' as we patiently wait for the color to begin in Howard Lake! Happy gardening!
05/10/2009 - Happy Mother's Day!
Wishing all of you moms' and grandmas' a wonderful Mother's Day! You deserve it and I am so thankful for my mom who is 83 years old. She is the most loving person I have met. I am so blessed and honored to be called her son! Thanks mom! We spent the day, after a quick trip to urgent care during church for our son who had an allergic reaction to his allergy medications, planting some dwarf 'Honey Crisp' apple trees for Becky. She was very excited for this surprise. This past winter was hard on our apple trees as we lost two of our known producers for no apparant reason. This was a welcome break for all of us as the weeding season is in full swing. A few years ago we puchased some 'Winged Weeders'. A 'V' shaped hoe that cuts in both directions. For those of you who are also organic, this is a great tool for removing weeds. We bought a bunch from our local hardward store. I would be remiss to mention how our peonies are growing. Our field in Howard Lake is just starting to show. Since this is our second full year in this field, I'm amazed at how far behind the plants are compared to our Delano field that is 22 miles east of here. Our Delano field, (that field is not open to tours) should see some color from our very early varieties in the next 7 to 10 days. Again I'm amazed to see that much of a difference being only 22 miles away. Will keep watching and WAITING for the Howard Lake field to wake up. Stay tuned for more info on the dates for our field tours in Howard Lake. Happy gardening!
05/01/2009 - HAPPY MAY DAY!
What a wonderful time of the year! Wishing you and yours a Happy May Day!
04/29/2009 - HAPPY SPRING!
Spring is finally here! With much needed rain now received, our sleeping 'eyes' are now beginning to wake up. Very early and early varieties are 4" to 8" high and late varieties are still snoring. Hopefully when the warmer temps arrive all will FINALLY get out of bed. It still amazes me every spring to see how they grow into such a glorious plant. One such early variety, 'Nova' comes out of the ground as a golf ball size bud that then transforms into its foliage and bloom. Very cool to watch! Make sure to email us some of your favorite peony pictures so we can post them on our 'Gallery' page. We will be posting the dates for our Howard Lake field tours in a few weeks (weather permitting of course). Though this field includes 2,000 1-year olds and 1,800 2-year olds, there will be some color to enjoy. We also would like to show you how we prepare our fields 3-years in advance of actual planting so we can continue to offer organic peonies. Yes it is very labor intensive; however, we love our peonies! Happy Gardening!
04/02/2009 - Swenson Gardens 2009
Welcome to Swenson Gardens! We grow extraordinary peonies in varieties you’ll never find in a garden store, and we use absolutely no chemicals. Our peonies are organically grown, robust, and downright gorgeous! Our gardens are located just outside Minneapolis, Minnesota, and our gardeners are Keith, Becky, and the kids, Britta and Luke. We take pride in growing the best peonies on the market and sharing them with you
